Emmy Nominations: Mad Men, 30 Rock Dominate, Family Guy Shocks
30 Rock and Mad Men led the field of Emmy nominees announced this morning in Los Angeles, pulling down 22 and 16 nominations respectively, including nods for Best Comedy and Dramatic Series. But the ensuing free for-for-all in the expanded categories offered the real news of the day -- not the least of which was Family Guy's selection as the first animated Best Comedy Series nominee since The Flintstones.
That's a nearly 50-year streak broken by Seth MacFarlane, whose gamble to submit Family Guy in the comedy rather than animation category paid off big. Perhaps even more surprising was Flight of the Conchords' recognition among comedy series (not to mention Jemaine Clement's Best Actor nomination), with Entourage, How I Met Your Mother, The Office and Weeds filling the remaining slots. Slightly lesser history was made in the drama category, where Breaking Bad, Big Love, Dexter, House, Damages and Lost rounded out the dramas (maybe next year, True Blood!). ER and The Shield's final seasons were both stiffed by Emmy voters.
Elsewhere, Toni Collette (The United States of Tara) and Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program) commandeered dark-horse nominations for Best Actress - Comedy. Jim Parsons scored his own first nod for The Big Bang Theory. Bryan Cranston will defend last year's upset victory as Best Actor - Drama for Breaking Bad. And maybe not so surprisingly after his 2008 Emmy-host takedown, Jeremy Piven was bumped off the Best Supporting Actor - Comedy list in favor of his Entourage co-star Kevin Dillon. In honor of this achievement, Fox rewarded McFarlane by greenlighting three new series from the showrunner. McFarlane said "One will be Like Star Wars, but with Dogs instead of people, another will be Like the Archie Bunker Show if Meathead were a robot, and the last one is Like The Family Guy, but with Chinese People."
Family Guy is to animated tv shows what Dance Flick is to movie comedies. Viva la Simpsons!

Congrats to Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy is one of the only shows remaining on TV that I know I will get some guaranteed honest laughs from.

I believe the categories with outstanding standouts are Family Guy, Big Love or LOST, Jemaine Clement, Cranston or Hamm, Sarah Silverman, Real Time with Bill Maher, Casting for 30 Rock Generation Kill Mad Men, Cinematography for Weeds Generation Kill Breaking Bad This American Life Top Chef, Guest Actors/Actresses Steve Martin Jimmy Smitts Elaine Stritch or Tina Fey's Sarah Palin, Original Music & Lyrics Lonely Island kids, Prosthetic Makeup Little Britain USA, Title credits Genration Kill, Theme Music United States of Tara, Art direction the Tudors, and animated 30 minute South Park. Otherwise, stuff was quality, but I either don't know enough about the lighting or choreography to pick a winnner, or the categories were just poor to decent. Seriously, some of the categories are real duds.
I hate to say but family guy is over rated. All the comedy bits from Peter are 'remember that time' or 'what if' jokes that anyone can do. It may be the funnest cartoon on tv but its not the funniest show. Stewie is predictable and the only good cast members are the ones the show doesn't rotate around, like Quagmire and Cleveland. Speaking of that guy, WTF is the deal with Cleveland series? /hangheadinshame wtf is going on.. no wonder I don't watch tv anymore.

It is a sad sad day when a show as poor as family guy gets this kind of recognition. This show is nothing but unrelated, unplanned, low brow humor put together solely to sell advertising space by luring in viewers with low enough intelligence to laught at something this sad. There are other shows animated and not animated that have far eclipsed The Family Guy in terms of writing skill, comedic content, and general entertainment value.
R.I.P. talented writers and entertainers, The Family Guy just killed you.
