VIDEO: Sean Penn + The Cure + Cannes = This Must Be the Place

From Antonioni to Wong Kar-wai, from Wim Wenders to Werner Herzog, the landscape and character of the American road has long captivated some the world's most visionary auteurs. Now it's apparently Paolo Sorrentino's turn to give us his take in his upcoming Cannes competition premiere This Must Be the Place, featuring Sean Penn as a retired, wild-haired, lipstick-rocking Robert Smith knockoff scouring the country for the Nazi who tormented his late father. Um, natch?

From the director internationally renowned for earlier Cannes darlings The Consequences of Love, The Family Friend, and the masterful Il Divo, Sorrentino's latest now boasts a cryptic sizzle reel for your consideration. Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch make appearances as well. It speaks for itself to the extent it says anything at all. Fair warning: The song (composed by David Byrne) will get stuck in your head -- at least until your head explodes.
