Is the Bridesmaids Marketing Campaign Doing It Justice?

Movieline's own Jen Yamato saw Bridesmaids at SXSW and declared it a magnificent crowd-pleaser and the best R-rated comedy since The Hangover. I believe her! But I can't believe the tone set by the new Bridesmaids trailer, which undersells the movie's intelligence and goes for cheap romcom laughs. Rage!

The music, big gags, and long lady glances seemed more indebted to, say, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton than The Hangover. The gross-out treatment of Melissa McCarthy's character sets that character's awesome stankface back at least a fourscore. Perhaps the studio is banking on the pedigree of the director, producers, and cast to draw in the cynics, but plans to court a more general audience with its promotions? Either way, let's forgive this moment of non-bliss and see it anyway in May.
