Remember that great feeling after watching Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time? It was just an eminently enjoyable, breezy action movie with a gonzo performance by Johnny Depp that was unlike any other pirate we'd seen before. And then the sequels came along, and any joy and inventiveness disappeared under the crushing weight of a convoluted storyline and performance-obscuring CGI. But behind the scenes footage from the new Pirates seem to promise a return the zany swashbuckling fun of the first flick,
At the start of the movie, Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow is England on the hunt for his ship, the Black Pearl, and has become a lowly ship's mate to try to sniff it out. He then gets involved with Penelope Cruz's Angelica and Ian McShane's Blackbeard, both on the make for the legendary fountain of youth. And though he's never mentioned in Entertainment Tonight's footage, it looks like there's a fair amount of Geoffrey Rush's Capt. Barbossa, back from the original trilogy. Take a look!
More swordfighting, more Deppian hi-jinks, and a straightforward plot that doesn't read like the Chinese directions for "Risk." Let's keep our fingers crossed that this Pirates journey will be worth taking this time (especially since they're making two more already). But if nothing else, at least the poster looks cool.
