In what is destined to be the most mocked, reviled and parodied campaign video ever of the week -- expect Kristin Wiig dust off her Christine O'Donnell impression on SNL this weekend -- the Republican nominee sets the record straight about the rumors surrounding her lifestyle choices. "I'm not a witch. I'm nothing you've heard. I'm you." Yep, this happened; here, watch for yourself:
I'm not in public relations, but when you have to lead your first campaign ad with the statement "I'm not a witch," you're probably doing it wrong. Everything wrong. Of course, O'Donnell isn't the only candidate with a hilariously inappropriate ad. Ahead, Movieline offers up some of our favorites from this Golden Age of crazy.
Here's Dale Peterson, the GOP candidate for Alabama Agricultural Commissioner, speaking so fast that he sounds like a character out of an Aaron Sorkin screenplay. This is safe for your office, as long as you aren't a "thug" or "criminal."
Along the same lines, Pamela Gorman, a GOP congressional candidate from Arizona loves her guns. That her ad bears a striking resemblance to the "Chicks with Guns" segment of Jackie Brown is purely coincidental, but no less insane.
Not to be outdone by their Red State Brethren, Democratic candidates have occasionally been known to take their ads somewhat away from the norm. Or maybe that's just Kathleen Rice, the New York candidate for Attorney General. In this ad, she channels the best episode of CSI: NY to never air.
And if Jerry Bruckheimer isn't your speed, perhaps a healthy dose of Roger Sterling will make you smile.
What does all this mean? Not much. Though perhaps next time Christine O'Donnell makes a campaign ad, she'll think about hiring someone from Mad Men to speak on her behalf. Can you imagine how much more sincere those witch denials would sound coming from the mouth of Bert Cooper?
