Everything was going so well for Mel Gibson in his return to acting after eight years away -- or at least it was until Tuesday, when for some unknown reason Gibson appeared on Chicago TV to talk up Edge of Darkness and ultimately be ambushed by a host who put the "entertainment" back in "entertainment reporter." Gibson, bless his heart, wasn't standing for it, wincing at mentions of his troubled past before finally signing off with a grudging A-word salute. Click through for the video.
Let's be honest: Considering his drunken, anti-Semitic infractions of recent years, Gibson made it through the press gantlet relatively unscathed (and with decent Darkness reviews and box-office to boot). Jimmy Kimmel's ball-busting notwithstanding, someone earnest and probing like this was bound to come along eventually to exhume the actor/director's demons, however disingenuous and condescending that process may be. Let's just hope for an apology and a rematch eight or nine months from now, featuring Gibson again swigging coffee in disgust before dismissing creatively worded questions about Jodie Foster's Beaver.
