Twilight Of 'The Host': A Sequel Is Not Likely

The Host 2

Has The Host already entered its twilight as a potential film franchise? Stephenie Meyer has said she envisions her sci-fi follow-up to the blockbuster Twilight novel franchise, as a three-novel story arc, but the probability of those future books translating into a movie trilogy is looking iffy at best.

A spokeswoman for The Host says information regarding the probability of a sequel "is not available at this time," but the film's dismal opening weekend  does not bode well for a follow-up.  The hordes who swarmed the film adaptations of Meyer's Twilight saga apparently did not find a romance about a parasitic alien nearly as compelling because they did not show up at the cineplex last weekend.

The Host's Box Office Sales Were Dismal

According to Box Office Mojo, The Host did $10.6 million its opening weekend, and as of April 2, it has made only $23.5 million worldwide — little more than half of its $40-million production budget. International box office results, which have become increasingly important, also lagged behind domestic. (In comparison, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is getting a sequel, has grossed almost $140 million worldwide at the box office as of April 2.)

But that's not the only factor that makes a sequel unlikely. At the Los Angeles premiere of The Host on March 19, Meyer told EW.com that she was still working on the second novel.  (The movie's director Andrew Niccol, who expressed interested in helming a sequel even cracked, “Show me the book, Stephenie....You shouldn’t be here. You should be home writing.”

The Follow-Up Novel Isn't Finished

The longer Meyer takes to finish the book, the greater the likelihood that the already meager interest in the movie version of The Host — and any sequel it might spawn — will dissipate further, while the first film's cast members, who've expressed an interest in doing a sequel, grow older and commit to other films.

In other words, you have a better chance of contracting a tapeworm than seeing a sequel to The Host.

I just watched this movie on Netflix because the title looked intriguing and I loved it. I've got to see a sequel if one is produced; if not, then I'll read the book sequel. I know the reason the first movie did not do well at the box office. Until I saw it on Netflix, I had never heard of it, and I usually try to keep up with these things. What does that tell you about how lousy the PR was for the movie by the studio? John Carter was a good movie that bombed at the box office because the morons at Disney didn't use the name of the book (A Princess of Mars) for the title; fans didn't relate to another name they didn't recognize. The Host needs to be given another chance.

+Brian Bowers:it could get a sequel movie who knows it would be kind of weird if the book series continued but the movie series did not continue also.

  • mark bigford says:

Maybe theyre not making a sequel cuz the movie sucked. peoples implausible reactions to situations really took me out of the movie. Its the whole teen drama thing i think.

  • I would really like her to finish the books I don't really care about the movie that much. They left some very important details out of the movie. The book was way better but books are usually better than their movie counter parts. If she finishes the books I would definitely read them. Although it would be nice if their would be more movies. I would like another chance for them to follow the books a little more closely.

  • No love says:

  • Jan says:

The Host movie was so close to the book it didn't disappoint, I enjoyed it so much I have watched it several time. I hope they continue to make the sequels.

  • Rosalle says:

there is one way which can help them to know that the public wants a sequel and then they wont have any choice other than fullfilling their demand .
since the movie name is not likely to be very famous so the ones who have watched the movie can share it everywhere about it which wuld help other people to know about it and this will lead to a greater demand of the sequel .

  • Nancy Johnson says:

To be totally honest my grandkids and I enjoyed this more than the Twilight series. I would love to see this become a series as well.

  • Nick Garcia says:

I loved this movie it was very dramatic and suspenseful. If your reading this please ask for a sequel!

  • I love this film! It was as gripping as it was brilliant! Its a combination of great sci-fi content, sweet morals, stunning CGI and lovable characters! I hate that it didn't do so well because it really should have! I really want a sequel and I know many others do also! The film really left the audience to look forward to the next film in the last parts of the film! It seems so appropriate that a sequel should be!
