Holy Crossover! Will DC Introduce Joseph Gordon-Levitt As Batman In Superman Movie?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt 'Justice League' Movie

Sitting through the interminable credits of a special-effects laden comic-book superhero movie is not my idea of fun, but after reading Drew McWeeny's HitFix post on Joseph Gordon-Levitt donning the Batsuit, I'm starting my glute exercises early in preparation for Warner Bros. and DC Comics June 2013 release of Man of Steel

The blogger explores persistent rumors that, as The Dark Knight Rises hinted,  Gordon-Levitt will inherit the cowl from Christian Bale and that Warner may introduce him in Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel, as a way of teasing JG-L's  eventual appearance in the Justice League movie, set for 2015.  The idea makes plenty of sense, especially since TDKR mastermind Christopher Nolan is credited as a producer and a writer on Man of Steel.

McWeeny even envisions a smart scene in which the two caped crusaders could be introduced:  "How crazy do you think fans would go if Superman were to take to the skies at the end of Man Of Steel, finally ready to fully accept his role as mankind's most powerful protector, only to have the closing credits interrupted when something catches his attention and he swoops down out of that sky, landing on a rooftop where Jim Gordon stands next to the Bat-Signal, interrupting just as the new Batman arrives for a chat about Gotham's latest problem?"

Or maybe Supes and Bats could just grab some shawarma.

Before there's a Justice League Movie, WB should play it smart and write a Batman and Superman Movie.

The problem with all the various Justice League iterations (America, International etc etc) was that they were a mostly very boring roster of left-over characters, from the dregs of the D.C. "universe".

Even though they pre-dated the Avengers, they could never compete because Marvel has by far the superior roster of characters - although individually they've tended to make for better comics than movies, whereas D.C.'s Superman & Batman have tended to make superior movies compared to Marvel's big screen adaptations (best to sweep the other D.C. characters big screen ventures under the rug).

The only truly A-list characters from D.C. (certainly in terms of modern cinema audience expectations) are Batman and Superman - and the most interesting dynamic between those two characters was in Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", where they had a homicidal hatred of one another.

I somehow can't quite see the Justice League movie exploring the Alien vs Human / Super-power vs Cunning, Training & Technology / Benevolent face of law and order vs Masked face of vigilantism dynamic, and that just leaves us with a bunch of un-engaging super-aliens and super-powered humanoids, right at the time when Avengers 2 will be hitting screens.

Nobody is going to care which series came first, Justice League is just going to look like a cynical cash-in on a bandwagon that is already on it's second outing...

Done - although I just realised I responded from a different email address to the one I have registered here (if you even have access to that info?).

Man of Steel ends with Superman flying at the speed of light to Gotham City to scoop Bruce Wayne out of the cock-pit of THE BAT seconds before the nuclear bomb detonates. Greatest after credits scene of all time.

As cheesy as some people (including myself) initially feel a meeting between these two would be, after some thought I think it would be the most effective way to build hype and excitement for a Justice League movie that can compete with The Avengers. Cavill already seems to be lending early credibility to his role as Superman the same way Bale did to Batman, and to see Supes and the carefully chosen heir to Bale's Bat-throne together on screen to tease the future of Justice League should fuel the fire for not only fanboys but the general audience as well.

I really wish that DC would just leave Nolan's Batman universe alone. Those films were great on their own, but tied into the Justice League it would not work out as well as I'm sure they want it to. For one thing, hopefully Bruce Wayne set up a fat bank account in John Blake's name before he left Gotham, because as people often like to say, Batman does indeed have a superpower, and it's his insane amounts of money. Further, as much as I enjoy JGL as an actor, it would be difficult to re-cast him as Bruce Wayne in a Batman reboot because audiences now associate him with the role he played in TDKR.

Also, and this might be a nit-picky kind of thing, but I think it would be weird to have Batman in the Justice League but have it not be Bruce Wayne

I don't know, I just wish they'd totally reboot the Batman character for Justice League and beyond. The more serious tone of Nolan's Batman movies just wouldn't mesh well with any of the other members of the Justice League aside from Batman. It's precisely for this reason that I'm still not sold on Man of Steel, because having a serious and dark tone fits well with the Batman character and universe; there are ways to portray many Batman villains in realistic, believable ways, as Nolan proved with Scarecrow, Ra's al Ghul, the Joker, and Bane. I'll wait until I actually see the movie to make a final judgment, but for now I'm skeptical.

I actually didn't like the Idea of John Blake being Batman I was ok with a partner up, but not Batman and Nightwing belongs to Grayson and only Grayson, so I call John Blake's possible character NightBat.

  • havok says:

But Bruce has not been the only Batman in the Justice League. While Dick was Batman he was part of the League. John Blake was a mix of all three Robins. So its not all that unheard of

The only people who could be Batman in my opinion or hold the mantle is Grayson,Jean-paul valley, and Damian
