New Life Of Pi Trailer Debuts Ahead Of New York Film Festival Premiere

Just in time for its World Premiere at the New York Film Festival this Friday, a new and more sweeping trailer for Ang Lee's Life of Pi has hit the web, setting up the 3-D adventure based on the 2001 novel by Yann Martel. The fantasy-adventure follows "Pi," an Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a boat in the ocean with a Bengal tiger along with some other charming critters.

The trailer sets up the ship wreck that sees Pi (newcomer Suraj Sharma) survive the disaster at sea and finds himself in the company of the tiger, set to the tunes of Coldplay's Paradise. Life of Pi, which also stars Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu, Shravanthi Sainath, Suraj Sharma and Tabu, shot in Taiwan and India earlier this year.

20th Century Fox will release Life of Pi November 21st.

Official log-line:

Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship's only other survivor - a fearsome Bengal tiger.

  • Gorgeous. Loved the book, couldn't wait for Ang Lee's take on the film. It looks to be extraordinary. Fingers crossed.

This just looks like What Dreams May Come 2. Of course, didn't read the book, so I have no frame of reference. But everything looks so CG'd and fake that it comes across as one of those movies where the "adventure" all takes place in his mind as he's drowning, and then he gets resuscitated and shares his "story." Hope I'm proven wrong though and that it is something else, because I'm tired of those kinds of stories.

Sucker Punch, I'm looking at you.

loved the book, I found it one of the most upliftng books I've ever read. I don't get why you keep talking about it being a downer. Is that what you call a film which isn't comedy romance, full of make believe?
The visuals look tremendous, and the book was gripping and felt very real. I hope the film retains this aspect.

  • Jake says:

Well, I can only go by the trailers that I have seen since I haven't read the book. Like many film fans, I have lost a lot of faith in the image presented due to the overuse of fake computer generated imagery. What you see as something beautiful, to me looks fake and hollow because it was created in a cheapened way.

You mention that the book was gripping and felt very real. But this trailer doesn't look "real" at all. The tiger looks fake, everything shown of them "at sea" doesn't look anything like being stranded in the ocean. If the imagery was actually shot out in an ocean and had some beauty, I would feel differently, I'm sure. If the tiger was a real tiger, I would feel differently.

I'm sure you will enjoy the film and you should. I'm just a bit more skeptical because the trailer reminds me of What Dreams May Come or The Lovely Bones in its style and both of those movies weren't very good.

And my perception of the storyline is also one that is similar in structure to Sucker Punch, which was also not very good. So there you have it. Reasons why I feel the way I do.
