Take a Gander at Ang Lee's Life of Pi

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's upcoming 3-D adventure Life of Pi is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel. The fantasy-adventure follows "Pi," an Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a boat in the ocean with a Bengal tiger along with some other charming critters.

Tobey Maguire plays Martel in the film, which stars newcomer Suraj Sharma as the young Pi. The shots are ethereal and fantasy 3-D may be Lee's next calling card post Taking Woodstock and Lust, Caution (not to mention his award-winning Brokeback Mountain), which were decidedly less illusionary as this latest film appears to be. And, who wouldn't want to make friends with a cuddly Bengal tiger anyway?

Lee began shooting Life of Pi, which also stars Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu, Shravanthi Sainath, Suraj Sharma and Tabu, in Taiwan and India earlier this year.

20th Century Fox will release Life of Pi November 21st.

I loved the book but that trailer just left me cold.

Does anyone know how close they are sticking to the book? Your description mentioned other animals Brian so I am hoping it was just selective editing to leave them out of the trailer.

I remember reading that my freshman year in college and thinking it was a terrible book. I don't know how you manage to make a survival story involving a tiger that boring. I'll skip this movie.

Has a definite What Dreams May Come meets The Lovely Bones feel to it. I know nothing about it, but I can only assume he's dead. Maybe the whole movie takes place while he's being resucitated and he comes back to life at the end and that's the survival part. Or maybe he's just dead. Or maybe he's alive the whole time in an ocean that is perfectly calm with a tiger.

Of course, I'm speculating. Again, I know nothing about this. I'm just reacting to the trailer.

Also, since my reaction was that it felt like WDMC meets TLB, I'm not particularly interested in seeing it.

It's one of my favourite books, the writing is amazing and the story is brilliant. I'm a little anxious to see how the film turns out, because those are some pretty big shoes to fill. I have faith in Lee, though. And the cinematography looks gorgeous. This trailer is pretty misleading, though, but you can't give too much away without ruining the entire plot.
