Beetlejuice 2 Possible Says Tim Burton: Key is Michael Keaton

Any re-hash of Beetlejuice will have to include Michael Keaton, Tim Burton who directed the 1988 original that also starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara has said. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who is currently penning a script for the Beetlejuice sequel said in May that he's spoken with both Burton and Keaton about the proposed follow-up.

In Beetlejuice, Keaton played the ghost in the film, which went on to gross nearly $74 million in the U.S. and cost about $13 million at the time to make. "I think he would be willing to do it. He would have to be [in] it," Tim Burton told MTV News at Comic-Con where he was promoting his new stop-motion pic "Frankenweenie." "He was great as that character. I think it's a way to unleash your inner whatever. I bet you he would get right back into it." Continuing, Burton added, "I'm finishing this, and then I need to [revisit 'Beetlejuice 2']."

Grahame-Smith told a crowd in Austin, TX back in May via Aint It Cool News "It's one of the things I'm producing at Warner Bros and it's one of the things I'm supposed to write…I met with Michael Keaton and Tim Burton about it and they said the same thing, 'if you come up with a story that's worthy of us actually doing this for real and not something that's about cashing in or forcing a reboot down someone's throats, then we'll think about it."

He also said he has his own restrictions for proceeding with the possible second Beetlejuice: "If it's not something we all get super-excited about then why do it…" He said he told the studio it "can't be a reboot or remake." The project would have to be in his words, "a straight, pure sequel. If it's 27 years after the first movie, then 27 years will have transpired in the next movie."

An animated Beetlejuice series ran from 1989 to 1992 first on ABC and then Fox, loosely based on the 1988 film that Burton developed and executive produced.

  • Probably won't happen. Except for 1992 "Batman Returns" Tim Burton has NEVER made a sequel.

  • Joe says:

One sequel is still a sequel.

  • riiiight says:

Even though he hasn't done any other sequels, you can't exactly say his oeuvre of late has been original material...

I am 12 years old and me and my sister loved the first one and we have loved every movie tim burton has directed so why should this be different

  • Laura says:

I hope they do it it! I am a big fan of Tim Burton movies and Beetlejuice is one of my all time favorites..I remember watching the animated series as well....nostalgic!!

  • ashton says:

A script was in the works almost immediately after the first one and both Keaton and Ryder were ready to take on their roles again. However, Burton lost interest and went ahead with the Barman projects. It would be neat for them to finally do this, but all the original actors are older. Unless they did something related to Lydia with Ryder as a mother or aunt with a new character experiencing Betelgeuse, it would seem redundant. This screen writer has a tough job if he wants to make this script interesting and exciting for those involved to become interested.... I have a feeling this may never happen, unfortunately.

I THINK IT SHOULD BE A CONTINUATION OF THE 1ST MOVIE. WHAT HAPPENED TO BEETLEJUICE AFTER THE WAIT IN THE WAITING ROOM?? ARE THE DEITZ' STILL AROUND?? ARE THE MAITLAN'S STILL DOING THINGS THE SAME WAY?? ENTER A NEW ENTITY TO THE MIX, & YOU GOT A REALLY COOL MOVIE WITH THE CHARACTERS ALREADY BUILT. GET IT DONE BEFORE BALDWIN GET ANY MORE FAT, LYDIA GET ANY MORE SLUTTY, & BEFORE KEATON REALLY LOOKS LIKE BEETLEJUICE!!

  • Aquarius says:

First off...they need a reboot/remake. Everyone is too old and it should be darker and more relistic. Not a child's movie but a R rated teen movie. Produced by Rob Zombie and Tim Burton. Or atleast a clay animated production with the same voices. I don't wanna see some darker drop dead Fred theme. And I like how the cartoon made Lydia and beetlejuice best friends. Forget the stupid ghost locked in a house. We need to start fresh and more adult and gorey. I think of Drop Dead Fred, little monsters, cool in the 80's and 90's but nowadays we need vulgar, violent, reality mixed with comedy. Shot let me right the script. I'll show you how its done. On another note we need to make another ghostbusters so the old fast can pass down the torch before they get too old and die.

    • choie says:

yes more teeny movies is what we need. Not. I, and a slew of fans want Michael Keaton. He IS Beetlejuice.

  • Aquarius says:

Oh and bring the cartoon back in a new way.

  • Autumn Bostick says:

I have the perfectttt ride for mr "beetlejuice " himself ..its a VW "truck" its black with wooden bed..ive never seen one like this before but would be perfect for this movie.

My wife and I are huge fans of everything Tim Burton does. I don't care how they do it as long as they do it!

  • Megan says:

@Aquarius-Your stupid...It's a freakin family based movie you idiot -_-...If they do decide to make a Beetlejuice2 it DEFINITELY DOES NOT need to be some big blood, guts,&killing horror fest cause that's not what it was originally -_- on a side note I hope they do make Beetlejuice2 ^_^ cause I love the 1st one I'm actually watching it right now lol ^_^
