Disney, Pixar Reward John Carter Director With Finding Nemo Sequel

Director Andrew Stanton may have made one of the biggest flops in a generation, but you know what else he made? The Oscar-winning blockbuster Finding Nemo. Thus today's big news from Mike Fleming at Deadline: "I’m told he’s now officially come aboard the Finding Nemo sequel and has a concept the studio loves. [...] As for Disney coming through with another live-action project, I’m hearing that nothing is firm but that the studio is working on it. It looks like the studio is ready to give Stanton a mulligan on John Carter. Stanton, who has played a big role in many of Pixar’s hits going back to Toy Story, has an opportunity to put a big flop behind him." Terrific! All's well that ends in a $200 million write-down well. john carter was awesome. not stanton's fault that disney didn't know how to market it. terrific film. unfortunate that there probably won't be a sequel

For the last damn time, IT WASN'T THE MARKETING. John Carter was an average movie that failed to connect with audiences. Too derivative of the movies the original stories inspired, and with a dull script. Geez.

  • kenneth says:

It seems completely unfair that Disney and Pixar would even give Stanton a second chance, after the miserable failure that was John Carter. And Max is right. The film WAS average. I'm tired of all these crybaby fanboys sticking up for the movie. Just admit it was a flop and get over it.

  • Keith says:

MAX - the marketing and the film itself were equal parts of the problem. Sure, the movie wasn't great, but the marketing was probably the worst I've ever seen in my life (MT Carney, anyone?).

So is this what Pixar has become now that it is officially under the Disney umbrella: mediocre originals and unnecessary sequels? Can't wait for It's Still a Bug's Life and Cars 3: The Next Blatant Cash Grab!
