Spike Lee Still Waiting on Green-Light for Oldboy

With his Sundance conversation-starter Red Hook Summer set for an August theatrical/VOD release, Spike Lee sat down with GQ and gave a rundown of which projects are happening for him, and which are not. Among the Spike Lee joints lost by the wayside due to funding struggles, etc.: His Jackie Robinson biopic, LA riots film, and Wesley Snipes-as-James Brown flick. Surprisingly, Lee admits he's still awaiting the green light on Oldboy — but in the meantime Lee's plotting to direct Mike Tyson on Broadway and has already interviewed the likes of Justin Bieber for a Michael Jackson doc celebrating the 25th anniversary of Bad, so there's that... Am I alone in hoping he never gets the green light for Oldboy?

Oldboy sucked, period. People think that $hits a classic, an absurd premise with a ridiculous surprise--not a twist as so many incorrectly call it. I don't care who remakes it; it's a flawed story, and it will suck. So, SD, I hope Spike doesn't get the green light either, but I suspect your motivated by a completely different reason.

      • SD says:

haha. It may have its flaws and differ from the source material but I did like it.

My desire, however, is motivated more for my dislike of pointless English language remakes for the sake of people who refuse to read subtitles than for the quality of the original.

I'm with you re: English language remakes for the lazy subtitle-averse. That said, if a remake feels different enough culturally or otherwise I'm intrigued. Just hate it when they seem like carbon copies, only in English.

You need to get your effing head examined, Oldboy only partially sucks if you watch it with the terribly overracted English voiceover. Ruan probably is one of the people who refused to sit and read subtitles though, so he probably did see the worst version of it.

Oldboy hasd the most shocking of all endings of any movie I've ever seen.

AP, you may enjoy reading subtitles in movies but I suspect you read little else. Your rude, unlettered post reads like so many other rude, unlettered posts written by the aliterates that pollute and troll websites. You don't know me yet you insult me and make an illogical inference based on my post ( Ruan probably is one of the people who refused to sit and read subtitles though, so he probably did see the worst version of it).Wrong! The only dubbed movies I watch are old timey martial art movies. Just because someone doesn't like something that you like, it is no reason to insult and malign that person. You should learn a little something about politeness and ethics. PS, to anyone who believes Oldboy's ending is so shocking check Chinatown and Angel Heart (1987). That's right, AP, not only do I watch foreign films with subtitles, I watch old ones, too! I "read" about them first, then watched them.

          • Smed says:

Wow. You insult everyone who enjoyed the original Oldboy (yes, your first post was an insult, not a critique) then have the nerve to call someone a troll for disagreeing with you? Well played sir. Well played.

          • ruan says:

SMED, a dissenting opinion, no matter how crude or crass, is not an insult. Perhaps, it's offensive, but not insulting. According to your very poor logic, anyone who didn't like Oldboy and expressed his/her opinion--like professional critics--insulted everyone who liked the movie. I recommend that you go to the library, preferably a research university's, and spend a year reading widely and, if it is within your obvious limited mental capacity, deeply before posting your thoughts publicly. Now that's an insult, dawg!

It should be illegal to remake such a classic. i was against it when I heard my idol Steven Spielberg was interested in remaking it. But even with Spike Lee to helm this, I think they should leave this alone. If its greenlit, there's no telling what would happen with Citizen Kane.
