Cannes Winners: Michael Haneke's Amour Takes Palme d'Or

Michael Haneke at Cannes

Michael Haneke's Amour won the Palme d'Or Sunday night in Cannes, capping the 65th edition of the festival. The film follows Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emanuelle Riva) a couple in their 80s who must endure a long demise after Anne suffers an attack.

This is not Haneke's first time taking to the stage to accept Cannes' top prize. He won the Palme d'Or in 2009 for The White Ribbon and he took a Grand Jury Prize at the festival in 2001 for The Piano Teacher and in 2005 won Best Director for Caché.

In other prizes, Matteo Garrone's Reality won the Grand Jury Prize, while Ken Loach's Angels' Share took the Cannes Jury Prize. Sundance 2012 Best Film winner Beasts of the Southern Wild by Benh Zeitlin won the Camera d'Or for Best First Film, while Beyond the Hills by Cristian Mungiu took two awards, including Best Actress and Best Screenplay.

Garrone won the Grand Jury Prize in 2008 for Gomorrah, while Ken Loach won the Palme d'Or in 2006 for The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

"Cannes shows us cinema is not just a diversion, but shows how we live together," said Angels' Share director Ken Loach. "In these dark times, let's show our solidarity with those who resist austerity."

"This wasn't just my first film, it was the first film for almost everyone who made it," director Benh Zeitlin said from the Lumiére stage Sunday. "[Cannes] is a temple and you don't know if you're able to dance in the temple, and you can. Thank you, you've changed many people's lives."

A prize for Mads Mikkelsen? Hallelujah! A prize for "Amour" by Haneke? WHY? I know - because Jean-Louis Trintignant is in it, and they wanted to honor that actor. Haneke knew that. That's why the casting. His films are just so horribly frustrating, and - here is an actual Austrian speaking - I don't know many people who liked "The White Ribbon" hereabouts. I am afraid of watching "Amour", because I already know what it's going to look and be like. WHY make a film about that? There has been a similar one, recently in Austria, and NOBODY went to see it. (Except me, that's why I am so afraid of "Amour".) Old people suffering from being old and the having a stroke or cancer or some other awful condition - why in the world would anyone want to sit down and pay money to watch that (except they are movie-critics and have to or family members or what to be seen at a premiere?) There have been lots of films from Austria, recently, dealing with frustrating family-stuff - and the theaters remain empty. Hail "Avengers"! More of "Snowwhite" please! THAT'S what going to the movies is meant for!

    • Movies are only supposed to be escapism? Since when? If you're not interested in potentially depressing or upsetting subject matter, don't see the film. In fact, don't even think about it! But there is something very important that you must understand: not everyone is you and not even is interested in the same things you are interested in. Obviously, many people have responded to Amour in a positive way. Don't try to belittle those people just because YOU are not interested. Just close your mouth and brain and go see The Avengers for the 23rd time.
