Is Ian Somerhalder Up for 50 Shades of Grey Role?

While visiting Ryan Seacrest's show, The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder revealed that he might be "potentially" up for the role of gazillionaire playboy/closet BDSM freak Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of E. L. James' breathless erotica 50 Shades of Grey. To which I say: Yes. I'll allow it. That said, Somerhalder was choosing his words so carefully it's hard to tell exactly how far in the casting process he might be, so take it with a grain of salt. Oh, and enjoy the mental image of Ryan Seacrest listening to the squirmier parts of the 50 Shades audiobook at the valet stand.

Somerhalder is a touch older than the 27-year-old bondage-obsessed hero of the 50 Shades trilogy, but as you can see from his hit CW show he may look 20-something for all of eternity. (Recall his turn in 2002's The Rules of Attraction, lest ye think he's just some pretty face from TV.)

I still can't believe they're attempting to adapt the dirtiest, most melodramatic piece of Twilight fan fic I've ever read into a movie. Let's hope Universal & Focus keep it authentically almost-porny. This movie can't come fast enough, so to speak.

Yes, yes, and oh yes! He is perfect for Christian.

  • Deborah zeni says:

I don 't know. I was think more along the lines of Alexandar Skarsgard for Christan.

  • IAN WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THIS! HE CAN PLAY THE BAD BOY SO WELL AND HE CAN SHOW HIS SOFTER SIDE WITH SUCH EMOTION THAT HE CAN MAKE YOU CRY!!

    • Big Sis says:

I completely agree with you Vickie. Ian has the look of Christian and can flip his emotion's on screen so well. He is Christian Grey in the flesh 🙂

  • sammy givis says:

    Taylor Kinney would be better...

  • steph says:

    He's perfect for the role!

  • Summer says:

NO! The role belongs to Robert Pattinson, the only bronze haired hottie in Hollywood.

  • Ashley says:

Defiantely Ian Somerhalder. He DESERVES this role! He is PERFECT!!!!

  • Liz says:

He is perfect for the role. He is Christian Grey in the flesh. Yummmy

  • taim says:

he is too boyish for that role, seriously, have you seen him in other things? He is only hot as Damon... Skarsgard would be perfect, he has no problem in doing nude scenes and the other things that are required for that role and he is manly...

  • Runchman Chick says:

I like Michael Mulhane for the role - Adam on Y&R - dark and sad

  • Lizza says:

You mean the book was written with Ian as the main character?? He is so perfect for this role! He has that bad boy, wounded soul image. The whole movie could hinge on who gets this part.

    • Lizza says:

      sorry, "wasn't" written....

      • Kelli says:

I think he is perfect for Christian, his eyes are even the right color, however, i do think Kellan Lutz would also be a great fit for our tortured controlling Mr Grey, Lets face it we need someone who is made of stone but filled with feathers

  • Plum says:

Tom Wlaschiha from Game of Thrones (...a man has a thirst) is the perfect Christian; tall, speaks five languages and is a rising star but not so well known yet, he steals all his Thrones scenes, does stage and screen, perfect!

    • Diane says:

I did't see Tom Wlaschihi name for any of the cast memebers - what character does he play? Don't you thin Emilia Clarke from show would make a good Ana Steele & she can act!

  • suzanne says:

Although I love Alex Skargaard and Rob Pattinson - Alex does not in the least match Christian's description (too tall and BLONDE) and Rob Pattinson looks too young. Ian however has the look to perfection and his acting skills are just right - he can swing moods like anthing. His smile it too die for! I picture Ian when reading the books.

    • Deb Zaranti says:

I think the author of the 50 Shades series must be a Vampire Diaries fan and subconsciously wrote the Christian character with Ian Somerhalder as her template! LOL!

  • Lily says:

Im hoping for Henry Cavill for Christian!

  • Kristin says:

I am confused at the people who say he would be perfect........ Did you READ the book? Have you seen Ian shirtless? He, in NO WAY is built how Christian is described.

    • Deb Zaranti says:

It would be simple enough for Ian to "bulk up" in about 3 months time for the role of Christian! Have you seen Zak Efron in his new movie....didn't even recognize him cause he's not a little high school boy any more...he's BUFF! With proper diet and weight training, Ian would BE Christian!!!

  • Kristin says:

    ALEX PETTYFER!!!!!!!!!
We must start a fan based movement for him to get this role!

  • Johanna Marquina says:

He or his bro on vampire diaries are ideal really he fits to a tee!

  • pam says:

    Ian somerholder is Christian grey

    • Brenda says:

I totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ian is the no.1 choice for the role. He is perfect for this. He can flip flop those emotions to the T. I love him in this part. No one is better than him for it.

  • Elcie says:

I can see Armie Hammer playing Christian!.....

  • Annette says:

He is so HOT and as an avid reader of the "50" books I vote YES for Ian!!!

  • Denise says:

I am really hoping Ian gets the part of Chistian Grey, he fits the part so well. He has the acting ability, the beautiful face and eyes that make me go weak at the knees. Plus, in his private life he does a lot for charity...so I think he deserves it.

  • Denise says:

I love Ian Somerhalder and he has a lot going for him for the part of Christian... the eyes, the smile, the perfect model looks but something is missing, Christian is supposed to be tall, muscular, intimidating. That is, someone who gives off a presence when they walk in the room and is smooth, cool and charming. I don't envy the person who has to cast Christian or even the person that is cast as Christian because we all have our own expectations of him. My choice would be Henry Cavill because he is middle of the road in terms of looks. Some women don't like pretty boys. Henry is very hansom without being pretty plus tall and muscular with a very winning smile. He also come across as smooth and confident. I know his British but I'm sure he can do an accent ...that's just my opinion.

  • Audrey says:

Im no professional, but I think you just crafted an excellent point. You clearly fully understand what youre talking about, and I can really get behind that. Thanks for staying so upfront and so genuine.
