Here, Watch Thirty Seconds of Total Recall

Again with this "teaser for a trailer" business. If you cannot wait until Sunday to get a glimpse of the actual trailer for Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake, here are thirty seconds of Colin Farrell driving flying cars and jumping off of balconies and Kate Beckinsale looking hot. I'm still holding out for evidence that Wiseman kept the three-boobed lady in his version, which will determine if this rehash of the 1990 sci-fi gem gets my ticket dollars or not.

I mean, at least the ridiculously short 15-second Breaking Dawn Part 2 teaser trailer teaser had pecs and hands and Edward Cullen and stuff. Show me the alien boobs, Wiseman!

The full trailer will air on ABC on Sunday during the first half of the Celtics-Heat game before an extended version debuts online at Apple.

The official synopsis for Total Recall -- "inspired anew" by Philip K. Dick's source short story:

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. The film is directed by Len Wiseman. The screenplay is by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and the screen story is by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon and Jon Povill. The producers are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe.

I hear this film is based a lot more on the short story than the 1990 film version.

  • Jen Yamato says:

Hence the emphasis on the short story in the press materials. And yet Wiseman knows he has to appease fans of the earlier film and has promised that his film includes nods to the fandom...

    • SD says:

What with this and S.T.'s story on the Robocop remake there is a lot of pressure to not mess up Verhoeven's films as I think both still stand up today as great films.

But I would much rather have 3 boobed mutants as a shout out to the fans than a token Arnold cameo.

Is there any word on the rating yet? Are they allowed to go for R? Or will this be another Die Hard 4?

  • AS says:

Ya know, it's 2012... you'd think they could make the CG explosions at least somewhat realistic. I guess the studio's going "fuck it, just put some cheap effects in there and get it out in theaters so we can make some money!"

    • Joe says:

"Ya know, it's 2012... you'd think they could make the CG explosions at least somewhat realistic."

LOL! You don't even understand what's funny about your ignorant comment. That explosion was done real. It's not CG dumbass. As for the rest of the effects, they look fantastic. Wipe the shit out of your eyes.

      • AS says:

Calm down, sir. No need to get all worked up over a teaser for a trailer for the Total Recall remake. But since you decided to assert your clearly superior knowledge concerning the production of the Total Recall remake, do tell, how did you acquire such intimate information?

        • Joe says:

I followed the production of the film very closely. If you knew what you were talking about, Wiseman is one of the few directors who doesn't like the overuse of CG. Go look at every film he's done. Very little CG work, except where absolutely necessary. Even the car crashing into the helicopter in Die Hard 4 was real.

The explosion was done with a large miniature, and the actors were comp'ed into the shot.

  • mad says:

I'm not gonna knock Wiseman...I mean he made Beckinsale marketable and married her. I do like the Underworld franchise, I have to admit. So I'm will to go for a ride on this one. You just can't beat Colin Farrell either!!

    • 2+2=5 says:

I would advise to be more careful with your optimism. In his short career as Hollywood movie maker Wiseman never did anything that can be considered above average. He is just another formula stamping hot shot that married his lead actress. I would not trust his approach to anything, so despite how nice the teaser looks and despite cool ensemble of actors, with PG-13 rating you can expect some mildly entertaining ride without anything substantial to remain in your mind afterwards and without any desire to watch it again. This will be just one time money grabber, the cult status will remain with the original film.

      • Joe says:

Like you would know the difference between above average and not.

Read it and weep. There's your above average dumbass. Too bad the studio hacked his R-rated cut up into a PG-13 cut. The film kicked ass, and was easily the best of the Die Hard sequels.

I might also point you to the consensus great reception that his Hawaii Five-O pilot got, which successfully launched that series.

Even the original Underworld, which he created, is above average for that particular genre. Even more so considering that film was made on a miniscule, shoestring budget.

You can also spare me the BS about how great the original film is. Total Recall was '80s, B-grade shlock, filled with bad acting, bad dialogue, and cheesy one liners. Fun? Yes! Great filmmaking? No way in hell. Did it leave anyone with anything, as you say? Hell no.

As for your notions of films leaving something in your mind? What are you, a kook? How many films do that? 99 out of every 100 films made don't stay with people. Not even The Dark Night or Batman Begins leaves you with anything of substance. It's entertainment. They're not curing cancer.

Truth be told I can't take people seriously who summarily dismiss something they haven't even seen, or criticize someone who is far more talented and knowledgeable about a subject than they are.

  • Plum says:

I wish there was a website where I could get info on more movies like Prometheus and Total Recall and far far less on the Hunger Games. Had to scroll way down to see that the film opens Aug 6. Maybe that could be put higher in the story? It's like unless they're spewing about fang dreamboys or Hunger girls nothing else exists on the planet, yeeesh.

    • Jen Yamato says:

I usually add the release date info at the bottom as that's the last relevant bit of info one needs when they're done reading an actual article, IMO. Will keep this in mind though.

And, what? All those Prometheus stories the other week weren't enough for you? 🙂 I know, I want more Prometheus, too. Total Recall... eh. We'll see if Joe's right.

  • Audrey says:

there is a secret chapter you can get only from the author

  • Grace says:

On Boston Street in Canton….then occur down for the boat!

  • I really liked your article.Really thank you! Great.
