Why Don't Women Narrate Trailers?

women_trailers630-1

With relations between the sexes having recently hit a dispiriting cultural low (news avoiders may consult Time Magazine's helpful round-up "Are Women People?" for cringe-inducing details), now is as good a time as any to ask and perhaps answer the burning question, "Why don't women narrate movie trailers?" Conveniently, the BBC is here to offer some insights.

It all sounds like a bunch of chauvinist shit-shoveling to me, but your mileage may vary. All I know is that newly, criminally deposed NYC news anchor Sue Simmons could turn this trend around in about a week flat with the right agent. Let's go, Sue!

Your cause is just, but there can be a lot of mellowing around the middle, if at the top it's just the boys.

Boy, that took painfully forever to load. Sigh.

There's not much new here. (Spoken as someone who explored commercial voiceover work some 20 years ago, after being told by too many people that my voice was sexy, distinctive and mellifluous.) I was told the business in NYC was pretty much handled by about 8 actors who did everything, and there was one woman in that pack -- she did children's voices, too.

Nowadays, if you have good ears, you can pick out established actors who are doing the work (WHY? Like they need more money?).

As for film trailers, for the longest time it was that One Guy who did them all, but didn't he die a few years ago? I heard he didn't like to fly and traveled around the country in his very own train car attached to a longer train. In any case, as long as most movies are what I call Man Movies, there will be the basso-voice man narrating the trailer.

Why? Because women have COOTIES, that's why.
