Uggie Oscar Mania Boosts Jack Russell Adoptions ... And Also Risk of Abandonment

The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America loves your Uggie obsession, but a word of warning to those swept up in the hunt for lookalike pets: "Today, Jack Russell terriers are hot! Tomorrow, those of us who are truly devoted to the breed will be paying the price for this surge in popularity with greatly increased use of our rescue system.” [ANI via The Dog Files]

Sad, but true. Remember the Taco Bell Chihuahua... now Chihuahua's make up nearly half the dog population of city animal shelters and humane societies (esp. in Los Angeles). It's great to have a pet, but PLEASE make sure you understand the breed's personality before you commit. Jack Russell terriers are VERY active dogs and get unruly very quickly without the proper attention paid to training and obedience. That said, they can be awesome (like Uggie) if trained properly.

I'm still shouldering my way through the roving packs of orphaned Great Danes since the "Marmaduke" hysteria from a few years back.
