Watch Meryl Streep's Friends Campaign For Her Oscar... During Her Kennedy Center Tribute

Last night, during the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast, Meryl Streep's friends feted the honoree in grand fashion. There were video montages introduced, touching anecdotes told, funny memories recounted, musical numbers performed and splits done in her honor --  by Robert De Niro, Mike Nichols, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline, Anne Hathaway and Tracy Ullman (who co-starred with Streep in Plenty). It was an epic ode to the actress's "superhuman" onscreen ability -- one, that after ten minutes of increasingly heaping praise, began to feel like one of the most elaborate Oscar campaigns to date.

With just two months until the 84th Academy Awards, last night's Kennedy Center Honors Meryl Streep-fest aired at a perfect time. The actress has just scored her Golden Globe nomination for her highly-anticipated performance in The Iron Lady and is already being called an Oscar frontrunner for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in a project that seems designed entirely for a Lead Actress Oscar win. Take a look at the 10+ minute CBS campaign below.

Should Glenn Close and Viola Davis even bother showing up at this year's Academy Awards? (And could someone please convince Robert De Niro and Mike Nichols to wax poetic about Uggie's screen contributions on network television so we can keep that Uggie Academy Award campaign rolling?)

I love Merly streep, but I really want viola Davis to win the Oscar for best actress. Merly already has 2 statues, and I believe that's enough. She's alreday a living legend and I believe it's time to put Viola on the "mainstream spotlight", to make sure she starts receiving roles worthy of her talents.

That's not what it's about. It's supposed to be about the best performance of the year. And, having seen most of the buzzed-about lead performances, that is Streep. The Iron Lady was inconsistent, particularly in the third act, but her performance is **remarkable.** I adore Viola Davis (and think she was simply ROBBED for Doubt - really, is *anyone* going to remember Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona?!?) but she was the one standout in a cliched film. If you put the two performances up head to head, Streep's is just the stronger. She deserves another Oscar, almost THIRTY years after her last.
