A slumpy month at the box office showed little sign of abating on Friday, when the holdovers Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked fought off a trio of high-octane newcomers -- including the abysmally performing We Bought a Zoo -- to lead the early holiday-weekend competition. 2. SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS: $6,785,000 ($65,539,000)
3. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED: $5,400,000 ($42,340,000)
4. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO: $4,600,000 ($12,976,000)
5. THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: $3,525,000 ($11,532,000)

Dragon Tattoo at No. 1 please!
People are just busy shopping. We're currently undergoing a huge economic boom, dontcha know! Wait till Sunday and you'll see a big jump in ticket sales.
Then again, it could be that most of the movies out are lame.
I think you're on to something with the latter observation.
Honestly, though, I'm just curious to see what happens with The Artist expanded to 100+ screens. Should be verrry interesting. I know I'm taking my parents for Christmas; I have a feeling there'll be just enough word-of-mouth curiosity -- plus what it's still getting in the major markets -- to give it an excellent weekend.
I live over 100 miles away from the nearest theater showing The Artist this weekend and I'm planning on using my Monday off to take a day trip to see the movie.
Is the "Artist" expansion going to happen or is that just something you'd like to see?
Oh well, either way, that and "Young Adult" are my two movies for tomorrow. WOO-HOO!!! Movies nowhere near the top of the box office list -- my specialty!

After seeing "The Artist," I'm not sure the word of mouth will be all that great. The movie, while good, just doesn't live up to the lavish praise that it's received. Believe it or not, I actually think "Young Adult" has a better chance of catching box-office fire.
