By the Numbers: Breaking Down the New Dark Knight Rises Trailer

After premiering this past weekend before Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows screenings, the latest official trailer for The Dark Knight Rises has hit the Internet today. Depicting a Gotham City eight years after the events in 2008's The Dark Knight, the trailer teases societal upheaval, (literally) explosive football plays and best of all, two new villains: Anne Hathaway's Catwoman (or at least, Selina Kyle) and Tom Hardy's mysterious, mumbling Bane. Let's parse the trailer the only way we know how: By the numbers.

Seconds of the ominous national anthem played: 8

Melodramatic confessions made by Alfred: 1

Number of mohawked and muzzled villains who prefer the comforts of a lambswool jacket lining: 1 (Bane!)

Percentage of muscle mass Tom Hardy appears to have lost between filming Warrior and Dark Knight: 0

Mansions being ransacked: 1

Number of impressively calm prison breaks: 1

Number of fictional football players named after the current Mayor of Pittsburgh: 1 (Ravenstahl)

Number of fictional football teams playing in Steelers colors: 1, the Gotham Rogues

Number of touchdowns made by Hines Ward amidst Heinz Field explosions: 1

Number of masquerade balls set at the Carnegie Museum of Art: 1

Number of Academy Award-nominated actresses at said masquerade ball: 2

Number of Academy Award-winning actresses at said masquerade ball: 1

Seconds of precious Joseph Gordon-Levitt screen time: 1

Punches thrown by Batman: 2

Number of hovercrafts shown: 1

Number of heavily-choreographed Gotham City fistfights: 1

Number of seconds I spent confused by Tom Hardy's Silence of the Lambs-style mouthpiece: 30

Christopher Nolan's final Batman installment premieres in theaters July 20, 2012.

Number of NYC exterior shots: 1
It feels like they _just_ filmed that stuff on the Queensboro Bridge, and boom, there it was in the trailer. I realize it's been weeks already, but still...

    • Pamela says:

the term epic is overused, but? it looks like this movie will rellay be an epic because Batman is a well known comic book hero, and the way Nolan has made? Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Inception, which were all real good, just makes one real anxious to see the end.

  • NP says:

Though some of that fighting stuff toward the end might have been NYC? Anyway, it's hard to miss the bridge which is so iconic so that's what popped out to me.

  • AS says:

    Pittsburgh

I'm just not feeling the trailer.
Feels like Super 8 all over again to me. How everyone (press and internet en masse) freaked out over it and were acting like it was going to be the greatest thing EVARRRR....
I think it's going to be the same here.
The crushing disappointment...I sense it waiting for all of you around the corner.

  • Megan says:

No Batman trailer will ever be as killer as The Dark Knight, but this definitely whetted my appetite. I do miss the days when it was filmed primarily in Chicago, from which I hail. Still, this was awesomeness. Once you accept the fact that this film just cannot be The Dark Knight, the possibility of disappointment wanes.

  • Strawberry Pain says:

It could be the holidays or the year-end.
It could be the bloodshot caused by office parties.
It could be the fatigue from the requisite shopping.
But I teared up when Michael Caine professed his failures.

    merry christmas, mr. scrooge.
    :-/

  • Bane says:

    1. The National Anthem runs through most of the trailer.
and 2. (SPOILER) That *is* Luke Ravenstahl.

  • Yojimbo says:

BRB, looping that single shot of JGL for eternity.

  • James says:

    I highly anticipate the trailer
