Friday Box Office: Sherlock Stomps Alvin on Another Sleepy Friday

What is going on out there, people? All these franchises and rehashes at the multiplex, and Hollywood can't interest you in any of them? Last week it was the aromatic anti-charm of New Year's Eve falling flat on opening weekend, and now new installments of Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks are limping along at the front of the pack? At least Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol showed signs life in limited IMAX release, but ugh. Next week's Christmas harvest couldn't come soon enough, but for now, your Friday Box Office is here.

1. SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS: $14,700,000 (new)

2. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED: $6,800,000 (new)

3. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL: $4,110,000 (new)

4. NEW YEAR'S EVE: $2,530,000 ($19,936,000)

5. THE SITTER: $1,435,000 ($14,756,000)

  • The WInchester says:

In what sad world is making $14 million in one day considered weak?

  • Shane says:

I've seen Game of Shadows and they're lucky they've duped people out of even that much. That is one uninspired sequel. And maybe the ugliest movie I've ever seen visually.

  • Charles says:

The only movie I want to see that is currently in theaters here is "Young Adult," though I'm waiting till next week to see it. The other movies on my wish list haven't made it here yet: "The Artist," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "A Dangerous Method." So yeah, I'm really looking forward to that Christmas harvest you mention.
Btw, without having seen "Game of Shadows" and just based on previous experience with Guy Ritchie movies, I was nodding in agreement when I read Shane Jenkins' "ugliest movie I've ever seen visually" comment.

  • casting couch says:

The same sad world when a singing chipmunks movie opens bigger than a Tom Cruise movie.

  • Quirky- says:

Not that I'm defending the Cruise (or is it the Bird? Or am I too late to the party entirely to use it at all?), but it opened in limited release on only 425 screens. Yeah, IMAX prices, but still...

  • S.T. VanAirsdale says:

The one where the more expensive sequel opens 35 percent off the pace of the original.

  • Charles says:

I just noticed on Rotten Tomatoes that "Mission Impossible" has a higher rating (95%) than "Dragon Tattoo," "War Horse," "Tin Tin" and "We Bought a Zoo." If that's still the case Friday, then it might be "MI" and "Young Adult" for the weekend.

  • Yeah, it was a brutal week. My holiday travels recently returned me to the small market my family calls home, and there is _nothing_ to see here. I think _The Descendants_ finally made it out, though when _The Artist_ arrives here is anyone's guess. Hang in there!
