Bad News, Julia Roberts: Mirror, Mirror's Online Praise Might Be Studio-Generated

Last week, you and I watched the first trailer for Tarsem Singh's Mirror, Mirror in slack-jawed horror. (After all, aren't Snow White adaptations supposed to be about the titular princess and not Julia Roberts's aging concerns, Bollywood dance numbers and Armie Hammer's impression of a dog?) Surprisingly though, not all of the Internet's feedback was negative. A few brave souls commented on the Relativity trailer enthusiastically -- and now MovieMavericks.com is claiming that some of those suspicious thumbs-up reviews came from the same source.

MovieMavericks.com points out that several "strangely optimistic comments" posted to their own Mirror, Mirror trailer write-up originated from the same IP address. Upon Google-searching those comments, MovieMavericks discovered that the same IP address user had posted the same positive reviews on other movie websites -- leading them to believe that either A) There is just a very dedicated Brooklyn-based Tarsem Singh fan who is hellbent on raising the bar for Mirror, Mirror buzz. Or B) The studio (or a party involved with the film) is having someone do some web damage control on the atrocious-looking trailer.

Among the copied and pasted positive remarks that MovieMavericks.com cites:

· "Julia Roberts is going to be awesome as the Evil Queen. She's such a good actress!"

· "Definitely seeing this with my boyfriend! Can't wait to see Lily Collins in action!!"

· "Tareem [sic] Singh makes awesome movies. Immortals was amazing and this will be too."

For the record, the only positive comments that the trailer received when Movieline posted it last week were from user Laurietimes2 ("Count me in!!!") and Rom Issy ("Beautiful scenery and costumes, fairytale story and a comedy? That rocks. In.").

Most commenters only had negative feedback though, exclaiming "AHAHAHAHAHA...oh wait, you mean it's not a comedy?" or comparing it to a "90s ABC Disney TV-Movie musical" and calling Lily Collins's Snow White "a plain looking woman with Dan Hedaya eyebrows!"

Do you think that the strangely positive remarks about a trailer that looks exceptionally bad is studio-related? Please let me know in the comments section below after watching Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer in the Mirror, Mirror trailer. Maybe you'll discover that the film is "definitely worth seeing" upon second viewing.

It's sooo bad upon second viewing. What is that, some kind of Britishy accent Ms. Robert's is supposed to be doing?

  • JustAMovieViewer says:

Hmmm, the trailer is not that bad.

  • The WInchester says:

Possible marketing tagline: Hey, at least it's not Hook!

  • Michael Lee says:

I too got these exact comments when I posted my reaction article for Mirror, Mirror.

  • Gabrielle says:

It's not bad. It's funny, will definitely check it out.

  • Henry says:

Looked like crap the first time but the second time it looked like shit..what?

  • I'm a real person and my kids and I laughed through the whole trailer. I think it looks like a lot of fun. Sure, the dog panting is a bit obnoxious but otherwise I liked it. I guess Brooklyn, my kids & I will be alone in the theater.

  • Boricua in Texas says:

Ugh. It is like a cheap wine that gets worse with age.

  • Boricua in Texas says:

    What's your IP address?

  • domynoe says:

This is going to be a train wreck. Seriously.

  • Liz says:

Nope, it's just as bad watching it the second time. No, never mind, it's worse! What's up with the Evil Queen's changing accents??

  • halou says:

what i don't understand is why this is news? because this happens a lot. i also don't understand why movieline has always had an anti julia roberts stance. long running since the nineties. what has this woman done to movieline to always inspire snide articles like this. god. and no, the trailer does not look that bad. it's definitely for children. it's what it is. people are gonna like it and others are gonna hate it. question their taste and not their ip address.

  • My IP says:

Very well said, Halou. It sounds like if some people would want to sink and destroy a film several months before its opening. It is not ethical...
P.S.: My IP is not from Brooklyn.

  • Noah James says:

"In related news: Grass is green!"

  • grace says:

oh i really thought it's a comedy,my fb friends thought so too!! HAHAHA

  • anonymous says:

It gets worse every time I see it.

  • Looks just plain boring to me. I won't even review it.

  • Kat says:

I don't think the trailer is particularly bad. However, it looks as though the editor was attempting to cram every joke he or she could into this one piece of footage, and it comes across as puerile and shallow. But I think they were trying for funny and charming. Ah, well. A swing and a miss! I was originally more attracted to this version of Snow White for its traditional heroine: raven hair, white skin, etc. But I'll probably see the other for the more serious telling of the dark tale.

  • Camille says:

Mirror, Mirror, the new movie, REALLY COPIED Once Upon A Time which shows on channel 8, every Sunday at 8:00. I am VERY dissapointed.

  • LovelyNyx says:

Sorry but its not going to do well, critics and most adults will hate it, but children will go see it much like Enchanted. I am going to see the other Snow white, it looks far more interesting, maybe worth getting out of the house to see. Mirror Mirror wins for worst tailer of 2012, I might even say ever in the history of movie tailers.

  • JJ says:

    This mess looks horrible!
Julia Robberts is a one trick pony, I think the fact that SHE'S the evil queen is the biggest turn off..
No doubt this will be a huge flop

    • kit kat says:

I think that the trailer should have more Lily Collins in it and less Julia Roberts. And a lot less puppy love;they should just take that out of the movie.
