What if Hollywood reformatted the plot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith from he-spy vs. she-spy to be he-spy vs. he-spy over the same she? Then you would have This Means War, the upcoming action comedy from McG which stars Tom Hardy (with his real accent!) and Chris Pine as two secret agents who go head-to-head after learning they are dating the same woman, played by Reese Witherspoon. Oh, and did I mention that This Means War also marks Chelsea Handler's live action blockbuster debut?
Looks fun right? Charlie's Angels director McG returns to his fantasy action fluff wheelhouse with this Will Smith-produced project. After gestating for nearly a decade -- the project was originally slated to star Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock -- we finally get This Means War with next year's Dark Knight Rises actor Tom Hardy and Star Trek star Chris Pine as fictional agents who resort to using their high-tech work gadgets to sabotage each others' personal lives. Witherspoon stars as Lauren and Handler appears as Lauren's sassy best friend, who honorably volunteers to test out both of Lauren's suitors to ensure they are worthy in the sack. In the best line of the trailer, Chris Pine deadpans -- after spying on Lauren as she heeds advice from Handler's "Trish" -- "Why is she listening to that old man?"
This Means War comes to theaters just after Valentine's Day on February 17.
Verdict: Why not?
