Johnny Depp Admits He Does the Pirates Films for 'Stupid Money,' Compares Photo Shoots to Rape

Today's real talk from Johnny Depp, speaking with Vanity Fair about his lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean franchise: "Basically, if they're going to pay me the stupid money right now, I'm going to take it... I have to. I mean, it's not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it's for my kids. It's ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It's for the kids." And, on the subject of being photographed: "Well, you just feel like you're being raped somehow. Raped ... It feels like a kind of weird -- just weird, man." [Vanity Fair, THR]

Who can blame the guy? If somebody offered me money that I didn't need I'd take it too. I've got family, friends and cherished charities that could use the money. And, of course, the kids come first!

it's not for him ! it's for his kids....and for the the private island...the private boat ...and the private plane...and the french castle...and the parisian private house...and the londonian house...and the NY house ..and the LA house ...and his entourage :his 4 assistants, his make-up artist, his hair artist and his sound enginner (?)

OK, I haven't read the whole article, but sounds pretty douchey to me. If you don't want to be photographed, don't be a movie star. Retire to one of your many glamorous homes, stop making those horrendous Pirate movies, and stop making douchey comments like this to glossy magazines when about 99% of the world's population suffering joblessness, hunger, etc. would happily endure a little "rape" by a Vanity Fair lensman if it meant they would be getting paid the gazillions you make for those crappy movies.

  • Morgo says:

i thought this photography= rape thing had already been said before and with bad PR repercussions

  • Noah James says:

Quit judging the man. For God's sake, islands don't buy themselves, people!!

  • WTF says:

Awww what a wonderful father. He makes crappy movies and takes the $300 Million per crappy movie just for the kids. And he agrees to get raped...I mean photographed...frequently also for the kids. ROFL. This is why actors should be seen and not heard. They are out of touch with reality. Please douchebags, stop using words such as rape and Hitler unless you really are referring to actual rape or Hitler. Thanks.

  • Megan says:

Didn't Kristen Stewart already take heat for likening photog activity to rape? Not the first time Depp should've put his foot in his talk hole. Unless you were actually raped, met Hitler, or were raped by Hitler, stop with these childish/ignorant comparisons. And now's not a good time to hear about making "stupid money" for the awful movies you've made lately when most of us wish we could make a 100th of the stupid money you get for working a million times as hard at thankless jobs. I'm usually a Depp fan, but he's gotta learn when to put a cork in it.

I'm a longtime fan of Johnny Depp's movies, and even I take exception to what he's said here.
No, I haven't read the whole interview. And while I generally do agree with him about the money part (honestly, how many of us wouldn't take "stupid money" for playing a goofy pirate role?), for him to say that being photographed professionally is like being raped comes off as ridiculous.
Yes, I understand, he doesn't mean it literally. But even those of us outside of Hollywood knows that the studios and media are a bunch of soulless blood suckers. Yes, there is exploitation going on, even OF wealthy actors and such.
But, honestly, I'd deal with the photographers for the magazine spreads, I'd deal with the paparazzi (and I hate them), I'd deal with the fans, etc.
Again, I don't know what led him to say that, but if he has reached the point where he doesn't care anymore, then he can stop. It's not as if he doesn't have enough money by now, whether it's for the kids or not. I'm sure he and his family could live many lives over with the amount of money he earns, and he's far from the richest person in the entertainment world.
While he hasn't gone as far to bash fans as Jennifer Aniston did, he's getting close to that territory.

One can only hope he's not telling his children that his miserable existence is all for them.
