Talkback: What's the Worst Line in Film History?

Movies teem with ridiculous dialogue, but only a few pop with memorably bad one-liners. Our friends at BuzzFeed compiled a list of 20 dubious movie lines, and while I'd have suggested more material from The Room or, say, anything in Black Swan, I'm more interested in what the Movieline hivemind thinks are worst. What say you, elite?

Here's one item the list definitely gets right. Happy Thanksgiving to poor taste!

And are we too cool to reference this old gem anymore?

Hit us up. What's the worst?

The 20 Worst Lines in Movie History [BuzzFeed]

Comments

  • The WInchester says:

"I wish I could wish these feelings away"
-Hayden Christensen in Attack of the Clones.
(And the obvious kneejerk fanboy "NOOOOOOOOO" springs to mind as well, but that's more in context line than the actual line).

  • Andrew says:

    "So...he's one of life's gherkins."
From the absolute worst movie I have ever seen in my life:
    Johannes Roberts's Darkhunters

  • Andrew says:

Linked the quote page by accident. Derp.

  • Tommy Marx says:

Braveheart: "They make take our lives, but they will never take our freedom."
Because you can't get freer than dead?

  • Susan says:

Jude Law in Music From Another Room- as a child he had helped deliver a baby. Years later he meets the girl, who he will end up falling in love with and when he first sees her, her says "Last time I saw you, you were covered in afterbirth".
    Ugh...

  • Usherette says:

When we were executives at (redacted) and charged with watching everything SyFy ever did and reading prospective SyFy scripts, we made up a list of horrible lines that were in every single one of them, over and over again. I wish I still had it, but it's not that hard to remember some. My two favorites?
"A tyrannosaurus? But they're extinct!" "Someone forgot to tell THEM that."
Maybe you had to be there. SyFy is just like meta bad line world, huh?

  • The Cantankerist says:

    Three doozies from the '90s...
"Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed..."
    "He's got space dementia!"
"We should have evacuated the cities hours ago. That's the advantage of being a fighter pilot. In the Gulf War, we knew what to do. Things are... not simple now."

  • Shane says:

"Autumn." - (500) Days of Summer

  • NP says:

"She had herself declared sane by three different psychiatrists."
    -Inception

  • NP says:

Pretty much every line in Showgirls.
"Man, everybody got AIDS and shit!"
    Uh, what?
Also, another Verhoeven classic, Basic Instinct:
"What are you going to do? Charge me with smoking?"

  • Dan Seeger says:

My all-time favorite bad movie line remains this gem from 1996's "The Arrival," spoken by Lindsay Crouse, who never met a piece of dialogue she couldn't ruthlessly deaden: "I get so damned apocalyptic when I drink."

  • Martini Shark says:

I'm fond of Val Kilmer, in "The Island of Dr. Moreau":
I want to go to dog heaven." This just a moment before he is shot by a man/dog hybrid.

  • The WInchester says:

Every now and then, I get a text message from my best friend declaring that somebody has space dementia. Certainly one of the worst lines, but one with remarkable staying power.
I'm glad we're not the only ones who remember it.

  • The WInchester says:

"Billy! Are you dumb or something?!?"
    - Donald Sutherland, the military general to Morgan Freeman's subtle act of subordinance in Outbreak.

  • maliu says:

The script for the movie Titanic is ridiculous but my favorite line to hate is uttered by Rose, "I'll never let go Jack, I promise" followed immediately by letting him go.

  • terebi says:

I nominate one of the best/worst lines of the David Lynch oeuvre, from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - "You won't find a turkey dog here." Actually, the whole movie script is almost entirely made up of head-scratching, awesomely quotable one-liners, like "Nicotine is a drug - caffeine is a drug", "I am as blank as a fart", and "This is a formica table!"

  • Robyn says:

"Hold me like you do at the lake on Naboo!" - Revenge of the Sith.

  • J K says:

Is no one going to invoke the immortal "pain don't hurt" from Road House?

  • Martini Shark says:

If you're going to invoke "Roadhouse" I'd go with:
That gal's got entirely too many brains to have an ass like that.

  • The WInchester says:

Every line from that movie is GOLD. How dare you invoke Roadhouse, when there's Next Of Kin's "They plow rocks for a living."
Especially when you know that's uttered by Ben Stiller.
