Not Surprisingly, Yoda Will Be Computer-Generated on the Phantom Menace Blu-ray

Because you don't own Star Wars on enough platforms, Lucasfilm is releasing the complete saga on Blu-ray in September. The massive and anticipated release will feature loads of bells and whistles -- including Original Trilogy deleted scenes! -- plus some new stuff. Like a computer-generated version of Yoda to replace the puppet used in The Phantom Menace . Click through for a comparison.

First off, The Phantom Menace is as bad as you remember, no? Egad! Jake Lloyd much!? That low-hanging fruit grabbed and squashed, let's give credit where credit is due: Puppet Yoda looks more fake than usual in Menace, surrounded by all the other computer-generated moments; his CG replacement feels somehow more real -- or at least complementary to Lucas's overwhelming digital aesthetic. As long as the bearded one doesn't touch OG Yoda, we're cool.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga hits Blu-ray on Sept. 16.

Just as there are only two Indiana Jones movies and one Matrix movie I still believe that there are only three Star Wars movies.
I shall pass on this and stick with my laserdisc rip of the original versions.

  • ILDC says:

    Which two Indiana Jones movies?

  • SD says:

haha the first two for me.
I know a lot of people enjoyed the adventures of Sr and Jr I prefer the darkness of Temple of Doom more than the comedy road trip of Last Crusade.

  • J K says:

In Blu-ray Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo now says "I love you, too, my darling, and I really do mean that." in response to Leia before he is lowered into carbonite.

  • sam says:

If anything, they should use digital technology to insert more puppets

  • Bradley Paul Valentine says:

I know what you mean and I sympathize. BUT c’mon. I don’t really have an argument. Just that. C’mon.
Seriously though there are four in the series. One sucks. You don’t recognize 3, but 3 is better than 2. 3 may have over done the comedy but 2 became almost like a horror movie.
I’d also like to make an argument for Matrix Reloaded. That one holds up. It has aged well.

  • Robbie says:

    Insert more puppets where? hahahaha
Just out of curiosity, they have left the rubber yoda from Empire & Jedi alone haven't they? right, right???

  • sam says:

Insert puppets in place of all the annoyingly fake-looking CGI characters. Starting with Jar Jar...Ugh, it's all coming back to me now. On second thought, I wish someone would insert a puppet into George Lucas's esophagus and let him choke to death. I'd buy a Blu-ray of that.

  • Brad says:

Instead of focusing on Yoda, he should've age-regressed Hayden Christensen's face, stuck it on Llyod's body, and hired a real actor to voice it.

  • anonymous says:

Will Lucas quit making all these retroactive changes. I like Puppet Yoda better than CGI Yoda.

  • bib says:

Clueless as to why people still go goo-gah over this. Seriously, in 1977 Star Wars was pretty flat out amazing... but that was 1977. George Mucus should have had a third grader write the dialog to these horrid prequels. There just might have been a little excitement there...

  • SunnydaZe says:

Puppet Yoda looks a bit drunk and high. GG Yoda looks like Puppet Yoda after a couple of Red Bulls and a cold shower.

  • J K says:

Did you really enjoy the rave scene? Or was it the pie-gasm?
I do agree that Last Crusade should be saved along with Raiders.

  • I can already hear the crying fanboys saying "we want our sock-puppet back"
