Today in 3-D sequel news, Screen Gems has unveiled the trailer for Underworld: Awakening, the fourth (and possibly last) installment in the Kate Beckinsale vampire-and-werewolf franchise. So! Squeeze into your best leather body suit, find some blue cellophane to look through, and click ahead to see Beckinsale reprise her role as the most badass vampire warrioress at the box office.
After being held captive for twelve years in some kind of perfectly-lit cryogenic holding cell, Beckinsale's Selene escapes only to discover that the world's humans have realized the existence of Vampires and Lycans and have waged a full-fledged war on both immortal species. What's a fanged, dominatrix-style heroine to do? Apparently steal firepower, sink teeth into her foes (who all seem to be male in this trailer), leap off ten-story buildings, and most impressively, topple a paneled van in a parking garage in the pursuit of...something. Vampire acceptance? A more versatile wardrobe?
Regardless of Selene's ambiguous goal, Underworld: Awakening (directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein) looks and feels like a high-concept video game, which might be a good thing. Or, at least, a good enough thing to put fanboy rears in seats.
VERDICT: If the skintight leather suit still fits, there will be an audience for Underworld: Awakening. It just might not include me.
