Since modern sex comedies are so often listless (see: The Change-Up), perhaps a trip back to the 19th century will liven things up. Fresh off announcing the Gala premiere of the Tanya Wexler-directed Hysteria, the Toronto International Film Festival has released a new trailer for the period sex comedy replete with more orgasms than most late night Skinemax films. Scandalous! Or at least an heir to the throne of sexual antics of Road to Wellville.
(Bet you didn't think Road to Wellville would make it onto your plate today.)
Starring the always charming Hugh Dancy, Rupert Everett and Maggie Gyllenhaal (who apparently went to Anne Hathaway's School of British Accents), Hysteria is the type of sex comedy that imagines overweight women singing opera during climax. "You have invented a machine that does harm to no one, and makes anyone who comes in contact with it feel better." Comes? Har! You'll have what she's having? Or something.
VERDICT: Low battery.
