Is Clash Sequel to be Re-Titled Revenge of the Titans? [UPDATE]

Warner Bros. has a March 30, 2012, release date and 3-D conversion ready to go for its sequel to Clash of the Titans, the Jonathan Liebesman-directed picture that has heretofore been known simply as Clash of the Titans 2. But signs found online this morning suggest that that latter detail may soon change.

Word into Movieline HQ this morning pointed us to a pair of new domain names registered by Warner Bros. Entertainment, including "revenge-of-the-titans.com" and "revengeofthetitans-movie.com." Asked this morning about the possible title change to Revenge of the Titans, studio representatives neither confirmed nor denied the title change to Movieline.

On the one hand, this is essentially the type of thing that a studio would unveil next month at Comic-Con at the end of some 3-D preview footage, so the downlow treatment makes sense. On the other, Warners might be looking into something else as well before the announcement: There's already a retro video game online called Revenge of the Titans; coincidentally (or not?) a retail version shipped to stores in Europe just this week. The Web site for the game is already at revengeofthetitans.com, right where a movie with the same title would otherwise be parked. It's not clear how software developer Puppy Games may be involved, or to what degree it is aware of the overlapping properties; Movieline's request for comment about the dueling Revenge titles has not yet yielded a response.

More to follow here as details become available...

UPDATE 3:20 p.m. ET: This official word just in from Puppy Games: "hm, well predictably we don't know anything about this, which means someone's going to be stepping on our trademarks shortly, which we're not happy about. Warner Bros. too - the evil empire if ever there was one. Thanks for the heads up, though I completely predict they will ignore us and crush us with their legal might and vast money pot."

Yikes. I should stress here that nothing is official about the title change or Revenge of the Titans in particular; only the URL registrations (linked above) are confirmed to have been made. And I'm still awaiting official word from Warner Bros. Will update as events warrant...
