Monday Morning Talkback: Let's Hear About Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Yo ho ho and a bottle of shrug? Despite massive worldwide grosses, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened with "just" $90 million at the box office in North America over the weekend. Though while that pales in comparison to the previous Pirates films, it accounts for the largest opening weekend of 2011 thus far. Translation: you saw it, so let's talk On Stranger Tides.

Topics up for discussion, among many others.

· Did you actually enjoy On Stranger Tides, or was it a tiresome exercise in blockbuster excess?

· Did Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz have adequate chemistry together?

· Was the rebooted feel -- i.e.; no Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley -- off-putting?

· How did series newcomers Ian McShane and Sam Claflin acquit themselves in On Stranger Tides?

· Was the steady hand of Gore Verbinski missed or did Rob Marshall prove he has what it takes to handle future tentpoles?

· Would you have any interest in seeing Pirates 5?

And so on. Pillage and plunder and leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

There was potential, but the main obstacle that obliterated any chance of this actually working:
    Rob freakin' Marshall.
Rob Marshall proved that he should never be offered a job to direct anything other than episodes of a Tyler Perry sitcom. The man made me wish they hired Brett Ratner. His work was that dire.

I didn't enjoy it, but I was a little bit sick and left two thirds of the way through. I will watch the end, but it didn't capture my attention.
Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz were good, they look great together and she is blievable in that world.
Did Not Miss Keira and Orlando one bit
In face newcomer sam claflin reminded me or Keira Knightly, something about the way they talk.
I don't know about the director, I didnt notice much difference in quality between the last two and this one
I would see pirates 5 maybe

  • The Winchester says:

Thought about seeing it, but then remembered I actually like myself and opted to see Hobo With A Shotgun instead, a movie that packs 5 times the excitement and awesomeness in half the time that the pirate movie took to unspool.

  • KevyB says:

Wow! You know a movie is awful when its core audience - the ones who fall for the advertising and show up on opening weekend - crap all over it!
