Stephen King Talks About the Carrie Remake, Suggests Lindsay Lohan as Lead

On Thursday, Movieline relayed the news that MGM and Screen Gems are planning to remake Stephen King's high school horror classic Carrie. Now, the author is sharing his conflicted thoughts on the remake, and even offering his own suggestions for the director and lead actress.

King spoke with Entertainment Weekly on Thursday about the reboot:

"I've heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and It. Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White... hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg."

Deadline first reported that MGM and Screen Gems had hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright/comic book writer who was tapped to save Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark to retackle Carrie. Early reports state that the new iteration would stay truer to King's novel than Brian de Palma's 1976 adaptation.

In the meantime, would you be up for seeing Lindsay Lohan play the shunned high school teen with telekinetic gifts? Maybe if David Lynch directed?

  • j'accuse! says:

Lindsay would be awesome in the remake, but they can't redo it unless they get Tim Curry to do it. He Pennywise, and nobody, nobody can fill those shoes. The Stand miniseries was not memorable to me, despite the presence of Rob Lowe, who I'd forgotten was in it. But then again, I did see it late @ night on SciFy.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Did Stephen King see "I Know Who Killed Me?" ?????????? This former child actor CANNOT ACT as an adult! Don't Do it, Stephen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • stina says:

Stephen King is one of the all time great writers and carrie is one of his greatest books. His judgment on casting on the other hand is whack! The girl from "Kickass" and "let me in" is a better choice, I forget her name but not her performances she rocked. I also heard ron howard is trying to adapt the dark tower series!! Leo Decaprio as Roland would be perfect.

  • Furious D says:

The already have Javier Bardem to play Roland, but the sheer size & cost of the Dark Tower have put things on hold for now.
As for Carrie, it was already remade, first as a musical, which bombed, then as a TV pilot, which bombed. That should tell the people at MGM something rather important, which is, when it comes to Carrie, audiences seem happy with the one they got.

  • Tommy Marx says:

Carrie, like Omen, Halloween, and Rosemary's Baby, are excellent movies. The remake of Omen was completely forgettable (there was nothing in the remake that justified its existence). The remake of Halloween is quite possibly the worst horror movie ever made; Zombie stripped the movie of everything that was great about it and replaced it with crap.
I'm not against remakes. I thought Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes were all superior to the originals. But there has to be a reason for the remake. There has to be an idea that will allow the remake to be better or scarier or SOMETHING. Remaking a movie just to remake it guarantees you'll end up with a shitfest like Friday the 13th. (Sidenote: how can anyone remake a lame horror movie like Friday and actually do a worse job than the original?!!!)
Carrie doesn't need to be remade. It was pretty faithful to the book to begin with. If they wanted to incorporate the filler material, that might be interesting. Have the movie revolve around the investigation into the prom that occurred afterwards, with the actual story occurring in flashbacks. But I don't see how that would make it scarier than the original.

  • PhillipP says:

I think Lindsay Lohan would be great in the remake of Carrie but who will play Carrie? The way Lindsay looks, King obviously meant she would play Piper Laurie's part.

  • Brent says:

I'm pretty optimistic when it comes to Lohan playing Carrie. Yes, her most recent performances have been--well--awful. But if "Mean Girls" has taught us anything, it's that Lohan can play a teenage girl striving to be popular, then spiraling out of control. It's just that initial "religious nutbag awkwardness" that she'd need to get a firm grasp on.

  • Yes, but as Phillipp points out above: can Lohan be convincing as a teenage girl anymore? Girlfriend looks ROUGH.

  • Me says:

I think either Alyson Hannigan or Zooey Deschanel would be great!

  • Tyler says:

I disagree, Carrie should be remade, I liked the 70's movie but felt it did not follow the book very well. I think a remake that follows the book would be great 🙂 as for Lohan playing Carrie...booooooo!
