Surprisingly, Not Everyone Wants a Sixth Fast & Furious Film

While Vin Diesel is out campaigning for an Oscar nomination, Fast Five is rapidly approaching the $150 million mark at the box office, less than two weeks after its release. It makes sense, then, that Universal is already working on a sixth installment of the franchise -- though curiously, not everyone involved with the franchise is anxious to get back behind the wheel.

The Los Angeles Times spoke to a few key members about the future of the Fast & Furious franchise, and at least one wasn't totally locked into returning.

"I want to see another ['Fast' film]. I want the journey to continue," said Justin Lin, who directed the last three Fast movies, but seems cautious about taking on a sixquel. "But I take it very seriously. And I would have to ask a big question: 'Why would we make another one? What would it be?' If neither of those things are answered, I shouldn't be a part of it. I have to be excited, because you get up at 4 in the morning and there's a lot to accomplish."

For his part, Paul Walker says he'll only return if Lin does. Vin Diesel, on the other hand, is ready to go with or without his director.

"I didn't start production on Fast Five until the studio proved they had the treatment for a sixth film," said Diesel. "When I returned to the franchise for the fourth film, I envisioned a trilogy following."

These responses raise one important question: When Universal presumably announces a sixth Fast film, do you think it can succeed if Justin Lin and Paul Walker decide to sit this one out?

Justin Lin and Paul Walker are not vital to the franchise. I'm sure their publicists are smitten with the question but seriously how many people said at some point in the last two weeks, "hey let's go see Fast & Furious, it has Justin Lin's directing and Paul Walker's acting!"

  • The Winchester says:

Bring back Singleton. We need more homoerotic undertones in part 6, the kind not seen since 2 Fast 2 Furious.

  • Warren says:

If Vin, Dwayne, Tyrese, Jordana and Chris return it Will work! Then add Jessica Alba to spice it up. Rehire John Singleton to direct the 6th one. He did a great job directing the second one.

  • Dr. "Doc" Doctor says:

Paul and Justin got to return, besides why would Jordana be back without him. Hopefully Lin decides to do it because that would suck without the two of them (more so Paul Walker). He is my 2nd favorite character in the series (#1 is Tyrese's Roman Pearce)

“When I returned to the franchise for the fourth film, I envisioned a trilogy [of envelopes stuffed with dollars] following.”
How about bringing back Lucas Black? Tokyo Drift is probably the best FatF movie after the original.

  • Who gives a crap about Paul Walker and Justin Lin? People aren't going to see these movies for the director and the second lead (who already sat out several of them). As long as there are fast cars and unintentional homoeroticism, no one cares.
