Sigh... Another movie that will make $100 million and will make me laugh twice, just like The Hangover.

First things first: It's a Judd Apatow comedy, so you expect that most of the gags are going to be formulaic. But, let's be honest: the formula works for most movie-goers. You're not going to mistake it for a Kevin Smith film any time soon. It's a quirky comedy about friendship, built around juvenile humor and awkward pauses. Most audiences will eat it up. Plus, there's the novel bonus of having a female-centric story, and a talented female cast. When was the last time you could say that a conventional comedy had enough female talent in it's lineup to push Jon Hamm into a supporting role with 10 minutes of screen time? This is no small feat, and I personally can't wait to see if the gamble will pay off enough for studios to finally stop relegating female comedians to sappy rom-com trash, and supporting roles in male-driven comedies.
With all due respect to the author of the article, you can talk about lazy comedy all you want, but when was the last time you saw a movie about a wedding told from the female pov and expected toilet humor? The subject is usually treated as precious and dainty. I, for one, was pleased to see something that at least tried to turn that tired behavior on its ear. That being said, it could have been smarter, but we just have to hope that Hollywood will start to move in that direction.
In terms of numbers, I don't expect it to fare very well, since it's still up against Thor and Fast 5, and comedies don't usually hold their own against shiny blockbusters. On top of that, there's a pretty unfortunate lack of marketing, here.
For my part, I thought this was a chick flick (excuse the term) until a friend of mine actually sat me down and made me watch the whole trailer. I had largely ignored the posters which made me think "oh, look, another wedding movie". This might be because the studio honestly doesn't know who to market this to. Simple: The same people who enjoyed Knocked Up, Wedding Crashers, or The Hangover. If you liked any of these movies, go see Bridesmaids. If you hated any of these movies, Bridesmaids will likely cause you to break out in hives.
