Our own Christopher Rosen (who I affectionately call "Crose" or "Croze" or "Croseanne Cash," in case you were wondering) reviewed the UK trailer for the cute-ass Sundance fave Submarine before, and since then, it's gotten cuter. In this new-ass American trailer for Richard Ayoade's directorial debut, romantic kiddies enjoy quirky sex with each other and remain tolerable while doing so. Put on your hip Serge Gainsbourg-theme condom and hump along.
The twee leanings here should scare you. There's a boy who listens to "French crooners," jumps in a pool while wearing a suit, and tries romancing the cheekiest girl in the world. It's Youth in Revolt without the revolt. Normally that'd be disgusting to me, but I'm charmed by the otherwise affect-free humor of these characters and their -- oh, how to put this? -- AcCeNtS!!!. So cute! Intelligent-sounding! And adorable! I'm from Illinois.
Bottom line, this is going to be a harmless comedy with heart and a mild Wes Andersonzi scheme. There's enough subtlety and strange, believable chemistry between our glistening young lovers to supersede atmospheric cliche, and I hope this turns into a beacon of sincerity for a "genre" of film with only a few bright spots. (And I'm including Youth in Revolt, dammit!)
Also: Sally Hawkins is in this. [Heels clicked.]
Verdict: Tying my cravat and jumping in the deep end!
If the embed gets yanked down, head over to Apple to watch the twee in HD. Submarine hits theaters on June 3.
