Know Your In-Development Snow White Projects: A Movieline Guide

The past few weeks have been filled with Snow White casting announcements. Some were surprising (Lily Collins as the fairest of them all), others were oddly satisfying (Armie Hammer as the Prince), and all of them were hard to keep track of -- if only because Hollywood is not just regurgitating the Grimm fairy tale once next year, but twice. Ahead, Movieline distinguishes the Snow White projects once and for all.

The Projects

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (Relativity Media)

Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal Pictures)

The Directors

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White: Tarsem Singh, a renowned commercial director (and possible honey badger) also responsible for helming The Cell and the upcoming Immortals.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Rupert Sanders, an equally renowned British commercial director who will cross into film with this project.

The Talent

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White:

Snow White: Lily Collins

Prince Andrew Alcott: Armie Hammer

Evil Queen: Julia Roberts

Huntsman: Not yet cast

Snow White and the Huntsman

Prince Charmant: Not yet cast

Evil Queen: Charlize Theron

Huntsman: Hugh Jackman is reportedly at the top of Universal's list to replace "Viggo Mortensen

The Concepts

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White: "A dark twist on the classic fairy tale, in which Snow White and the seven dwarfs look to reclaim their destroyed kingdom." [IMDb]

Snow White and the Huntsman: "A huntsman is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but instead he chooses to let her go and the two are evidently chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape." [IMDb]

The Spin

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White: "Not your grandfather's Snow White. [...] Ours is edgy and there is more comedy. [...] The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do." -- Brett Ratner, producer on the project

Snow White and the Huntsman: American fantasy adventure film from Evan Daugherty's 2010 Blacklist-ed script.

Scheduled Release Dates

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White: June 29, 2012

Snow White and the Huntsman: December 21, 2012

And if the above films don't satisfy your Snow White curiosities, the fairest heroine of them all will return in 2013 to learn kung fu in Disney's Snow and the Seven project. Natalie Portman was interested in the live action film, which would feature her as "an Englishwoman who goes to Hong Kong for her father's funeral -- where she realizes that her evil stepmother is out to get her." Instead of meeting dwarfs, she meets seven warriors who teach her self-defense skills. Obviously.

So what do you think? Will Snow White be to 2012 and 2013 what friends with benefits were to 2011?

You're actually missing a THIRD Snow White project - Snow and The Seven Although I believe it's now just called The Seven. Do we really need this many projects? Come on now!

  • Julie Miller says:

    Hey Jason,
I mentioned it at the end of the article since that is due out in 2013, not next year. But I agree, Snow White overkill!

  • Jason R says:

You're totally right! I'm so sorry for not noticing that. Still, thanks for the well-written article. I'll be using the guide as the different Snows progress.
