The summer of 2011 is poised to be an important one for the Marvel brand -- and from the way Thor looks (which is to say, kinda bad), that means the pressure is on Captain America: The First Avenger to succeed. Well, good news! Based on the new trailer for the Joe Johnston film, that might be easier than initially anticipated.
In what amounts to an extended riff on the Super Bowl spot, the full-length trailer for Captain America promises an action-heavy, Nazi-hating romp -- the type of blockbuster that summertime was made for. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) wants to join up to fight those terrible Nazis, but there is one problem: He looks like Pete Campbell! He's tiny! Not to worry though: a heavily-accented Stanley Tucci is on hand, with Tony Stark's father (Dominic Cooper) and some science-y mumbo jumbo, to turn him into a super soldier.
The trailer highlights that transformation scene, and it's a good one; the Benjamin Button-like effects done to make Evans look itty-bitty are impressive. As are Tommy Lee Jones' jowls. And all that shield tossing. Plus, Red Skull! This trailer almost makes up for the Thor marketing campaign. Almost.
VERDICT: Now, Mr. Stark.
