Unless you have a Google Alert set for "Antonio Banderas, Sam Elliott, James van der Beek, Snoop Dogg, Autumn Reeser and missing stripper" you probably haven't heard of The Big Bang. That's OK, because your official introduction to the dark thriller -- due in theaters May 13 -- awaits you ahead and, thankfully, this feature promises to be nothing like the similarly-named CBS sitcom.
Banderas plays "Ned Cruz, a real-life private eye" who is handsome, speaks with a thick accent and drives a white convertible. Based on these qualifiers, he is hired by a scary-looking Russian boxer to find his stripper girlfriend -- and the $30 million worth of diamonds she is hiding. Led by former O.C. star Autumn Reeser (who plays a waitress with a fetish for particle physics), Ned descends into some kind of neon-lit bizarro underworld where a reclusive billionaire with remarkable hair (Sam Elliott) plans on recreating The Big Bang underneath New Mexico. Oh, and did I mention that James van der Beek plays a bad-attitude actor? And that Snoop Dogg tests the bounds of his acting ability as a bad ass porn producer with teased hair? Because they're in this one, too. Of course.
VERDICT: A good rental, if only to see Sam Elliott as a science geek in a Big Bang project that does not involve a laugh track.
