VIDEO: Keira Knightley and Joe Wright Team Up for Unnecessarily Long Chanel Ad

When did it become cool for top-flight directors to create commercials? From Martin Scorsese to Robert Rodriguez, some fairly big names are getting comfortable with their inner-Don Drapers. Joe Wright is the latest artiste to produce some pretty piece of marketing, and the Hanna director has apparently decided to emphasize what he's had success emphasizing before: Keira Knightley.

Backed by a truly terrible rendition of "It's a Man's World" by Joss Stone (seriously, egad!), Knightley stars as a perfume-commercial version of herself, the type of Hollywood starlet who rides a motorcycle like The Bride in Kill Bill and makes sexy eyes at the handsome Italian-looking photographer at her photo shoot. It's all perfectly beautiful -- Wright is an expert shooter -- but like so much of Atonement, the emotional investment isn't there. Though, really, how much of an emotional investment could you have in a commercial that didn't include a little kid dressed as Darth Vader.

UPDATE, 3/22, 2:37p: The original version of this post mentioned David Fincher with Robert Rodriguez and Martin Scorsese. Obviously, Fincher has been directing commercials forever and isn't new to this racket, so his name was edited out for clarity. I was referencing his 2008 Nike spot with Troy Polamalu and LaDainian Tomlinson, and not his well-known past commercial work, though you wouldn't know that since you aren't a mind reader. Carry on, and watch Joe Wright's spot below.

  • Edward Wilson says:

Fincher's been directing spots for over 25 years. That's how he started. He was a partner at Propaganda and now at Anonymous Content.

  • G.Markham says:

Personaly, I like it very much. Sensual and elegant.
