Like some of the best (and worst) work of David Lynch, I wasn't positive where this promo for the Lynch-directed Duran Duran webcast was going when it started. It looked more like a cheap rip-off that owed more to Lynch's reputation for being "weird" than something actually inspired by his work. At the same time, I was kind of intrigued by the idea of Lynch just screwing around with Final Cut Pro effects instead of showing any concert footage. Ah, and then the reveal: The faux-David Lynch style gets chipped away to reveal Duran Duran! This short spot could have been so much more.
I have not been able to find confirmation of whether Lynch actually directed this promo (I'm hoping not), but regardless, the thing plays more like a poor man's version of the title sequence to Se7en than a trailer teasing a Lynch project. I would have preferred a completely unexpected promo, but nonetheless, here are seven obvious ideas that would have still been more intriguing:
1. David Lynch alone in a room talking about Duran Duran. Or anything at all.
2. An insane close-up of a blank-faced Laura Dern with a concert reflected in her pupils.
3. David Lynch singing Karaeoke to "Hungry Like a Wolf." All of the silly negative effects and iMovie visual effects are allowed in this promo.
4. Duran Duran playing live in Rabbit suits.
5. A collaboration between Duran Duran and Julee Cruise (Fingers still crossed for this during the actual webcast).
6. The lesbian scene from Mulholland Drive with "Girls on Film" dubbed over it. Position the webcast as this year's Black Swan!
7. Any clip from one of these music videos.
