I get that once you've put yourself through the ringer and taken on some of the most challenging, memorable roles of the last 30 years, that maybe you want to just relax and get paid. That's fine! I'm sure Harvey Keitel knew exactly what he was getting into when he signed up to do Little Fockers. That said, could he have possibly been paid that much to star in what appears to be South Korea's answer to Mr. Bean?
In The Last Godfather Keitel plays the father (or mentor?) of Korean actor/comedian/writer/director Hyung-rae Shim, who also directed the film. Shim is set to take over Keitel's mafia empire, but get this: He's a klutz. He drops his sniper rifle, chases his hat and even farts right as he's about to set off some dynamite. Meanwhile, Keitel keeps a straight face.
I'm not opposed to goofy physical comedy. In fact, I'd probably be more willing to go with the wacky flow if this trailer were any less obnoxious. But it's not. I can't tell if it's the incessant horn or the fact that every spill, blunder and falling object is cut together too quickly to allow for any wit or context, but either way, the only time I smiled was after the trailer finished. That was when I imagined Keitel on the set just barreling over with laughter after watching the scene where Shim chases his hat. I truly hope this happened.
VERDICT: Pass.
