Steven Soderbergh Still Planning to End Great Career with Television Remake

Nothing like going out on top? Speaking with Studio 360's Kurt Anderson, beloved director Steven Soderbergh reiterated that he plans to retire from filmmaking after he makes two more films. "When you reach the point where you're like, 'If I have to get into a van to do anther scout I'm just going to shoot myself,' it's time to let somebody else who's still excited about getting in the van, get in the van," Soderbergh said. "For the last three years, I've been turning down everything that comes my way, so you're not going to have Steven Soderbergh to kick around anymore." You will, however, have the opportunity to kick Soderbergh for his planned swan song.

The Oscar winner said that he's got two films remaining: The first is his long gestating biopic about Liberace, with Michael Douglas as the singer and Matt Damon as his younger lover. The second? The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which is apparently still full speed ahead. "That's a great way to sort of step off," he said to Anderson about U.N.C.L.E.

"Great" is one way to put it. "Perplexing" is another. "Disappointing" probably would fit, too. Of course, no one will ever count Soderbergh out -- after all, he made diamonds out of the coal that was the original Ocean's 11 -- but there is something a bit underwhelming about the last film on his resume being a '60s television reboot. Fingers crossed his final trip in the van is a good one.
