In 2001, after Paz Vega's sexy and moving performance in Sex and Lucia, I was poised for her to break out in America, or at least become a staple of quality indie films. I tried to keep hope alive after her false-start in Spanglish and a number of appearances in even more mediocre films, but I'm disappointed to report that her latest starring role in the Thriller/Comedy Cat Run isn't doing my optimism any favors. At least this overstuffed, almost incoherent trailer sure isn't.
When the title makes a pun like Cat Run, you should probably know what you're getting into, but this trailer falls pretty hard even when viewed with adjusted expectations. It begins with what appears to be an accidental murder of an escort at some rich-person party, and then suddenly Paz Vega has an important hard drive and everybody in the whole world is chasing her, including Janet McTeer (Doing her best impression of Cate Blanchett in the Hanna trailer), Christopher McDonald and D.L. Hughley.
The editing and music is practically begging for some pulled quote like "A fast-paced thriller that's equal parts hilarious and sexy!" Unfortunately, even with Vega playing an escort, there's nothing particularly sexy here. And as for the humor, well, just try to sit through the impromptu song at the end without cringing.
Verdict: Poor Paz Vega.
