Finally: The Oscars Get Serious About Their Envelopes

oscar_envelope225.jpgI know what you've been thinking for the last, oh, 70 years or so: "If only the Oscars would class up their game and maybe hit Papyrus on the way home and rustle up some more colorful, indelible stationery on which to deploy the winners' names." Holler! Your prayers are answered, and there's awesome paper-stock porn video to prove it after the jump.

Designer Marc Friedland got the commission to rework the envelope and the card inside, which have basically gone from the staid off-white stuff delivered in PricewaterhouseCooper's monthly Staples order to a sleeker, poppier, more frameable version of Oscar-themed birthday invitations. The packaging is handcrafted from recycled McDonald's french-fry containers "a high-gloss iridescent metallic gold paper stock, with red-lacquered lining that features the Oscar statuette hand-stamped in satin gold leaf":

The outside and flap of the envelope are an Art Deco-influenced satin gold frame with an ecru inset panel that has the name of the award category in charcoal ink. The card that reads "And the Oscar goes to...." along with the winner's name is fashioned from heavyweight ecru featuring gold-foil accents and a gold-leaf-embossed Oscar statuette. The winner's name will also be printed in charcoal ink.

Find a closer look in the video below. Wouldn't it look great with Jacki Weaver's name on it?

It appears like a ton of effort went into something that looks only slightly more classy than the "Gnomeo & Juliet" birthday invite cards I picked up at Party City.

Martini Shark must have had a few before looking at the photo. I think they look gorgeous! And they should, the Oscars are Hollywood's prom. The designer Friedland does gorgeous work.
