Weekend Receipts: Adam Sandler Wins The Weekend Over Bieber By The Skin Of His Teeth

Coming in at a virtual tie, Adam Sandler's latest laugh-free laffer narrowly beat the Biebs for the glory of a first place finish. The margin is so close -- just a couple hundred thousand dollars -- that it may change by the time the final numbers roll in on Monday. Meanwhile, Gnomeo & Juliet came in a surprisingly close number three, while Channing Tatum's S&M historical epic settled for number four. Your weekend receipts are here.

1. Just Go With It

Gross: $31,000,000 (new)

Screens: 3,548 (PSA: $8,737)

Weeks: 1

Critics have rightly been cruel to this horribly lazy, mirth-free stinker. But the audience of Cinemascore gave it an A-! And women gave it an A! Whaaaaaa???? Oh, America. I am deeply, deeply disappointed in you. Don't make me get Britain in here again to whip you into shape!

2. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

Gross: $30,260,000 (new)

Screens: 3,105 (PSA: $9,746)

Weeks: 1

Perhaps I just haven't seen it yet, but I thought there would be a mash-up between the trailer for this movie and Sean Connery's rebel Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. C'mon, internet! Bieber could end up with Kim Basinger!

3. Gnomeo & Juliet

Gross: $25,500,000 (new)

Screens: 2,994 (PSA: $8,517)

Weeks: 1

James McAvoy occupies the same mushy part of my heart that Christina Hendricks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the movie Clue does. But James, laddie, you are pushing it with this gnome business. I'm just gonna close my eyes and think of Professor X.

4. The Eagle

Gross: $8,589,000 (new)

Screens: 2,296 (PSA: $3,741)

Weeks: 1

Every bar called The Eagle that I've ever seen before has been, without fail, a gay leather bar. This isn't to cast aspersions on the movie. I'm just predicting where it's going to play in heavy rotation once it comes out on DVD.

5. The Roommate

Gross: $8,400,000 ($26,053,000)

Screens: 2,534 PSA: $3,315)

Weeks: 2 (change: -44.0%)

Since Burlesque couldn't do it, I'm happy that The Roommate has a shot of becoming this generation's campy classic. Congrats all around guys! Wire hangers for everybody!

Walmart Nation has spoken! If you ever find yourself wondering why so many crappy movies are made, while talented directors seem to have trouble getting their projects off the ground, remember this weekend. Americans like crap, and Hollywood will happily continue to dump it on them until a better product is demanded.
