What's With the Dirt-Rain in First Captain America Poster?

On Sunday, America will get their first glimpse of Captain America: The First Avenger when the trailer for Joe Johnston's favorite new film rolls out during the Super Bowl. Until then, this brand new poster for the film will have to suffice. Which is good, because you might need a day or so to process what's happening on this thing.

First of all: The muddy rain. Did a pig trough explode behind him? Did Thor's hammer land in a sidewalk puddle? Second: Those gloves are entirely too big -- it looks like Chris Evans is ready to either clean a sink full of dirty dishes (that mud!) or perhaps cut up some meat. Other than that -- pretty awesome! Except for "AVENGE" and Evans' downcast frown, which looks a bit too much like Edward Norton's in The Incredible Hulk poster. OK, other than that: pretty awesome!

What is up with site constantly hating on everything these days...seriously becoming ridiculous
Just hating for the sake of it..
    Verdict: Lame!!

  • Christopher Rosen says:

Oh, calm yourself. I like this poster -- I just found those few things a bit bizarre. Seriously, how could anyone actually hate a poster? Unless it was that original poster for The King's Speech. Shiver.

  • I guess you didn't read the Cobie Smulders piece yesterday. Just loving for the sake of it! We can't win!

  • Wandering Menstrual says:

Gee, I wonder if that "muddy rain" is debris from an explosion.
Joe Johnston is one of the worst directors in Hollywood right now (I say "one of" because F. Gary Gray is still making movies, as far as I know). You can't wait a few months for the movie to come out and suck before you unleash the snark?
    Rosen Fail.

Good article Christopher Rosen. I didn't find it snarky and you admitted you liked the poster albeit a few mistakes.

Good point. In the future, I will take after you and unleash snark on Johnston in the comments section? Um.

  • Sarah says:

Nope. I'm sorry, outraged commenters, but the dirt-rain requires an explanation.

  • Nova says:

More important than the dirt rain, why is he covering his private parts with his shield? Is someone trying to score a soccer free kick off him?

  • KevyB says:

Dirt rain is obviously from bombs exploding. The movie takes place during WWII. Did we not all see the dirt rain in Saving Private Ryan? Or any other war movie with bombs ever?

    IT'S ASH. GOOD GOD.

  • Wandering Menstrual says:

At the risk of creating a snark vortex that would potentially shake Earth from its axis, I was simply trying to make the point that this questionably assembled one-sheet was the least of this movie's problems. I sincerely apologize to the legions of of Joe Johnston fans out there I may have offended. I still have PTSD from Wolfman.
Seriously though, Rosen, you're a good writer with good opinions. This catty mud rain shit is beneath you, dude. That's all.

  • Marcus says:

I hear you dude, people will criticize every dumb little thing, and they expect us to love them for it. Then again, why criticize the critics just to perpetuate the disease.

  • Kitty Kitty Bang Bang says:

It's called action photography, numb nuts. Dirt rain....please.
And stop being so sensitive to criticism when it comes your way.

  • With criticism coming my way is as matured and conversation-starting as "numb nuts," it will be easy to be less sensitive. Thanks, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang! #getworse
