Warner Bros. Announces That Henry Cavill Is Your New Superman

henry-cavill_225.jpgUp in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...the second male lead from The Tudors! After much speculation and gnashing of nerd teeth, Warner Bros. has finally announced that Henry Cavill is Zack Snyder's pick to play the Man of Steel in the new Superman reboot. You might know him from the aforementioned Showtime series, or from the underrated Stardust, or as Stephanie Meyer's rumored original choice to play sullen sparkler Edward Cullen. The internet stands ready to register your applause or disgust, comic geeks. Perfect pick or shady selection? Personally, here at Movieline HQ, we're just happy someone gave the poor sod a break. Interesting choice. Wonder how much Cavill will be required to bulk up for the role?

I am surprised they cast Chris Evans as Captain America. It seems like American superheroes now need to be played by Brits.

This is an outrage - and an insult to American actors. Now, all three major American superheroes will be played by Brits - Batman, Spiderman and Superman, the most iconic American superhero of all time. It's a slap to thousands of American actors who're looking for a break, in effect saying "none of you are good enough to play America's foremost superhero; sorry!". No offense to Mr. Cavill personally, but I find it impossible to believe that not one single U.S. born and bred actor was right for the part...not even strapping 6'5" Armie Hammer, so brilliant as the twins in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. (And why not do the whole thing a la Robert Zemeckis BEOWULF motion capture CGI, since the majority of the new SUPERMAN FX will be heavily CGI in the first place? That way, the characters can be designed to spec and never age as the series goes along.) I hope that this latest desperate attempt to reboot a dated property proves to be box office kryptonite for Warner Bros., even worse than the last attempt with the too young Brandon Routh did on 2006. That one made the fatal mistake of trying to be a Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN film, after Mr. Reeve had died - to the point of resurrecting digitally Marlon Brando as Supe's pop. (Satirized to great effect on MEGAMIND last year.) Might be better for all concerned to let the Man of Steel rest for eternity.

Cavill is an actor, people, and a very good one, who is also really good-looking, sharply masculine, with dark hair and a great jawline and good eyes. Think he’ll be able to do the accent, and he’ll look like Superman. If you’ve seen him in The Tudors you also know he’s a very strong actor. this is a really tough role to pull off.
