Anne Hathaway Cast as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises

anne-hathaway120.jpgThat sound you just heard was the Internet exploding. Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. announced today that Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway will take the role of "Selina Kyle" in The Dark Knight Rises. So, Catwoman? Nolan doesn't say specifically in the press release: "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story." The director does confirm one villain, though: Tom Hardy will be playing the villainous Bane, and not The Riddler or Dr. Hugo Strange or any other obscure Batman foe. [Deadline]

There's no way she'd be as awesome a Catwoman as Halle Berry.
    No. Effin. Way.

  • Catwomanizer says:

I am sure she will do a professional job with the role. She's a professional actress. The real problem is Nolan's increasingly fascist interpretation of the Batman mythos. Can you imagine what bleak, ultra-gritty Catwoman origin we will get? Internet terrorist operating under the avatar of "The Catwoman." Neo-noir spoiled heiress born to a competing billionaire aristocratic family?
Would they have the balls to make her a high-class madame who runs a literal cathouse and goes vigilante to defend her sisters. Black Swan lesbian darkness looms.
I mean the only thing more ridiculous than emphasizing camp in a batman film-- is trying to make them gritty and "realistic." Nolan's forced portentous tone can not grow any more humorless and autistic. People are going to look back on these films and their paranoid martyr-fetishism and laugh in a few short years.
Instead of trying to make juvenilia adult, can we just be less juvenile adults?
Can I at least get a detective story? Not Burton, Not Nolan. No one gets that he's supposed to be an eccentric, obsessive-neurotic Sherlock Holmes.
And, by the way, when you want to blend in to the night-- you wear blue, not immobile black leather.
    So much for gritty realism.

Please crawl back into obscurity, Sean Young.

  • Catwomanizer says:

I'm going to read that in explosive raspy Bale-growl.

Unbelievable. That woman has about as much sensuality as a mouse. and once again, a woman of color is overlooked....how about Zoe? Salma? Sophia? Kerry? Hollywood just doesn't get that the world is over 50% colored people and the movies are not reflecting that at all....and you wonder why the boxo is down and keeps going down.

  • Chicago48 says:

Is James Cameron the ONLY director who recognizes women of color (Michele Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana) when it comes to action & sci-fi movies? I'm getting a little sick of the "boring" casting of white females who exude nary a bit of sensuality on screen.

  • Kaye says:

Why is this being turned into a race thing? The whole point of the Dark Knight movies is to be true to the original comic book. I think Anne Hathaway will do a great job, I'm really excited to see the film.

  • cerealface says:

Chill-out people. This isn't a race thing. Why should Nolan PC-ify Catwoman? Not everything is about race. Get over it already.

  • MeNotYou says:

What?! I thought Catwoman was supposed to be sexy. Anne reminds me of 17th century female protagonists. Bad casting.

  • Brian says:

Considering how many actresses Nolan had to choose from, this was shitty casting. Hathaway doesn't have the right look for Catwoman.

  • Lolita says:

I love it when people say "this isn't about race." It's always about race. If he re-cast Batman as a Latino actor, would it be about race, then? I'm not saying I think Catwoman shouldn't be white. In fact, I think it's offensive to assume that women of color are more "sensual" than white women. I just can't stand when people make remarks that reflect their obvious ignorance about the way Hollywood works.

  • bane says:

Actually, Catwoman is one of the most race flexible pop culture roles, based on its history. It was no big deal the ethnicity on the tv show, mainly because all the ladies brought hardcore A-game sensuality to the table, incinerating any race consideration, even in the mid 60's. Halle Berry's movie was Pitou merde in execution, but she could have been cool. The point is, Nolan picked, we assume, who HE wanted, regardless of race. All the actresses mentioned above would probably had a great time with it too.
