Watch Ricky Gervais Eviscerate Hollywood at the Golden Globes

If you had been waiting to see Ricky Gervais pantomime oral sex between a 24-year-old Playboy Playmate and Hugh Hefner on NBC, then the Golden Globes were for you! They were also for anyone who loves watching the stuffing taken out of Hollywood -- and awards shows -- in general. So, good for us, then, that Gervais hosted the Globes on Sunday night -- just don't expect to have him back next year. When Phillip Berk was asked after the show if Gervais would host in 2012, he responded with a very loaded, "No comment." Alas, we'll always have this monologue. Click ahead to watch Gervais torch the Beverly Hilton.

The monologue was great...but it was downhill after that. I think the producers yanked him for the second half because he didn't have much to say.

  • Dimo says:

According to his Tweet, Hef loved the joke about him.

People thought the 2010 GG's would be Ricky's only hosting gig for the show. Love him or hate him the fact that he says out loud what everyone is saying in hushed whispers behind closed doors (Charlie Sheen's a mess, Scientologists tend to be closet cases, Hugh's marrying another 20 something gold-digger)makes it all the more fun.

I kind of agree -- and there is a certain bit of show business to the entire thing -- but I don't know that Berk was all that happy with Gervais bashing him like that. Maybe he was in on it, and Gervais will come back; maybe not. There is at least a 50% chance that Gervais wouldn't want to do it again either.
The fact is that Gervais' jokes weren't even that original -- Charlie Sheen stuff, really? -- but that he never backed down made them riotous. Nothing he said here was that inflammatory, but by not at least paying tribute to the "celebrities," I think he got the most out of his material. Outstanding, outstanding hosting job.

I think he sucks... the life out of the room. But who would want to attend a "tribute" only to be insulted? Last year, at least Ricky G was laughing at his own stuff. This year he seemed to even bring himself down. Having an insult comic host an awards show is like a backhanded compliment.

My biggest problem with Gervais last night - I know unpopular opinion in these parts - was that he was not funny. Mean for sure, but that's about it - an insult comedian who forgot the comedy aspect of the gig. Otherwise, I surprisingly thought it was a pretty good show this year, some interesting/unexpected winners among "The Social Network" onslaught.
