The Golden Globes: Like the People's Choice Awards, if the "people" were a potentially corrupt group of foreign press reporters. As such, it's best not to take these awards too seriously with regards to their impact on the Oscars. But, still: The Globes have a charm about them, and more often than not, they take more chances than the Oscars. (See: The Tourist; or don't, actually.) So, fun! Ahead, my crack predictions for which movie stars will stumble walk onto the stage to collect their newest trophies on Sunday night.

Expect the HFPA to go for the usual suspects. Johnny Depp! Annette Bening! That one movie about what the kids are doing these days with their newfangled computers! The Golden Globes may not always reward the actual best films and performers of the year (True Grit, anyone? Anyone!?) but they make for a dazzling show, fueled by star power and lots of booze. Look for tipsy winners' room speeches from these fine folks.

The Golden Globes is my favorite award show of the year because there is an 85 percent chance that an intoxicated presenter will hand an award to an even more intoxicated celebrity, a 90 percent chance that Ricky Gervais will make a joke about this exchange and a 100 percent chance that I will be drunkenly liveblogging as this happens. Herewith, my predictions for this weekend's 68th Annual Golden Globe winners a.k.a. "the right picks," regardless of whether or not the Hollywood Foreign Press agrees.

I lost what little respect I had for the Academy Awards the year Crash beat Brokeback Mountain. The Golden Globes, on the other hand, never got my respect at all -- I didn't really know they existed until the year they gave Pia Zadora the Best Newcomer Award or whatever after her husband flew members of the Foreign Press to watch her Vegas act at his casino. And yet, the Globes endure, and somehow people actually care who wins them, when what really matters is who's wearing what and who gives the drunkest speech. Let's do it!

Ah, the Golden Globes -- out of all the silly, meaningless award shows, it's the silliest and most meaningless. But like an old uncle who swears the neighbors are sleeper KGB agents and Siamese cats are satanic, it's still fun to watch. And since this is the year that they declared Burlesque among the year's finest films, look for them to try to keep to the straight and narrow, winner-wise, so as to appear more like a noncorrupt organization of easily bribed chowderheads. So no Madonna-over-Frances McDormand-in-Fargo types of upsets this year. On to the predictions!

Since I live in Paris, where movies release on a completely different schedule, I have not had the opportunity to see about 70 percent of the Golden Globe Nominees. Not that my definition of quality has ever predicted an awards show before, but I just want to make it clear that I'm working solely off of hype and very vague hunches. Maybe I'll buy a dartboard before the Oscars.
